Car makes a high pitched whinning noise under acceleration.
I can't figure this noise out. The noise sounds exactly like wind going through a tunnel. It gets louder when I accelerate and goes away after 2nd gear.
I'm not getting any error codes and it still drives normal. Someone suggested it might be the alternator.
Any ideas on what this could be would be greatly appreciated.

does the noise change w/ the rpms or vehicle speed at all? that can really narrow it down. if it changes w/ rpms, its engine/component related. take the belt off and see if theres any play in any of the pulleys. if it changes w/ speed, its axle, tire, something related to that. check for play in the wheel bearings, u-joints, they can all do odd things like that.

The sound is definately in the engine bay. It changes tone with the rpm, but only first gear, goes away in all other gears. I'll check the pulleys tommorrow.
It might be comming from when I got some oil spilled on the pulleys and belt. I'll wipe the belt and pulleys to see if that was it as well.

if its only in first, that makes me think the trans. it is a possibility (slim one) that its resonating from the trans through the engine. do what doward said first, take them off one at a time, see if it goes away. if not, take a long screwdriver or prybar and put the handle to your ear and the other end to the engine by the crank and other areas. then get under it and do the same by the trans. see if you hear it coming from there. have someone run it in 1st on jackstands while you listen to the trans. now youve got me curious, keep me updated, and good luck

Ok, I listened for the sound for 15 minutes and I managed to locate the general area. It appears to be comming from either the AC pulley or the Power Steering Pulley. I checked for play in either pulley and there was none.
The sound wasn't any where near as loud yesterday, but then again yesterday I had the AC on too.
