What year did the 2.8 graduate to serpentine?

I saw a 3rd gen last fall that had a 2.8 with the single serpentine belt... Even some of the old S-10 2.8's have the single... Why is mine a v-belt? I've also noticed that there are a couple of 1986 engine parts tha do not fit my engine. Some of the 85 parts will. Did I get a leftover 1985 powerplant in my 86 SE???

1987 + got the serpentine, which I am truly glad I have, except for the fact that I had to replace the tensioner cuz it rattled. But it's SOOO easy to remove accessories w/ the seprentine!

The project T/A doesn't have serpentine though, I saw an 87 GTA and it STILL had V-belts... when did they change over?

This is starting to prove my theory that I have a leftover 1985 engine... Hmmmm...

Does anyone else have an '86 Special Edition 'Bird that could take a peek under their hood for me???

Not sure why you think you have a leftover '85...? As was said, 1987 started the serpentine belt system.

82-84 used 3 v-belts.

85-86 used 2 v-belts and a serpentine-style belt for the alternator, but no tensioner is present.

What parts don't fit your car? My '86 motor looks just like yours, except you either have the a/c delete option, or you changed out the heater box and p/s pulley.

At one point, I suspected the EGR valve was sticking because the car would randomly shut off when I put the clutch in. So, I procured a new EGR valve for a 1986 2.8... It didn't seem to fit right, and the gasket was different... I traded it in for a 1985 one, and it fit just fine...? (Possible wrong part? I have no idea...)

Turns out my coil was intermittant, so I returned the EGR valve back to the parts store and bought a coil instead...

Yes, I have the A/C delete option. I figure, who needs A/C with t-tops...? I also don't have the power locks option, either...

I can't remember, but there was another part that didn't seem to fit correctly, or couldn't be found on a 1986 parts list, or something that started me thinking a long time ago that the engine was old stock from '85...
