1984 Coil replacement, no MSD??

Okay as usual I have an issue. 1984 Carb'd V6 2.8L. I was doing abit of a tune up, including replacing the coil. I went out and got the MSD GM blaster external coil.

Turns out it doesn't work with a stock 84! The stock coil in the car has male pins. THe MSD has a female connecter? What ?

Anyone know what is going on here? My understanding was the MSD was suppose to work on the 82-92 Fbodies?

Unfortunately, the 82-84 v6's are different than the later ones.

Few options

1. You could splice the correct connectors into you harness. This will allow you to run the MSD coil you currently have.

2. You could splice the two "A" teminals together along with the two "B" terminals. This allows you to mount a conventional coil away from the exhaust manifold and use the cheaper MSD Cylinder coil.

3. Use a stock replacement

Allright so the connecter is all thats different, I CAN jus get one from a junkyard and splice it in. Cool thanks!

Id rather not go for any other replacement then ACCEL or MSD, and they both use the same connecter.

This makes it easier

Just watch you connections

On the 86, Both of the terminals have an "A" and a "B" embossed into the connectors. I have not checked my 83 as it is sitting at the tranny shop . I imagine there are A's and B's on the original connector as well

When I had the Accell on my 84 they made a wiring harness so you didn't have to do any splicing. This was a few years back, but you might want to check with MSD before you go splicing wires.

Only harness I have seen is for later 80's coil to the MSD 6/6A ignition gox...would still need splicing to fit with my 84's coil.

But thanks for the idea.

FROM ONE WHO HAS USED THE ACCEL COIL ON THEIR 1985 CARB'D S-10 BLAZER FOR OVER 100,000 TROUBLE FREE MILES!
Ya get the plugs wire harness any/everything ya need for SIMPLE INSTALLATION!
How GREAT IS THE ACCEL REPLACEMENT COIL FOR CARB'D V-6?
I USED IT TO START UP MY FIREBIRD AFTER MY ORIGINAL COIL CRAPPED OUT!
GO GET THE ACCEL

IF ya like I'll send ya pics of my ACCEL COIL installation in my Blazer.

It's been in same spot since 1990!
So simple a job to swap from the factory coil to the Accel,
SOMEDAYS I'm an idiot & I did it, so can you!
Here's a pic of the Accel in the Firebird,
The CARB version Accel coil appears slightly differnt YET IT IS THE SAME THING, just hooks up/wires up differently!
BUY ACCEL!

Heh, I have seen that pic around alot here Ked, thanks. I jus have to find the time now to go to a junkyard and get the harness off of a newer bird so I can use ANY aftermarket coil. Ah well one woulda hoped someone made an adaper to fit the coils to a 84 bird.

Let me offer my response perhaps more clear.

My ACCEL on my S-10 Blazer, which is the ONE YOU SEEK FOR YOUR 84 RIDE comes with the wire harness.
Ya just mount the 1984 version coil, plug in connections & go on your way.
NO NEED TO SEEK OUT HARNESS.

The above coil pic is from my 1985 Firebird.

I used the ACCEL DIRECT REPLACEMENT COIL for the Firebird 1985 model year in the pic.

I will take a pic tomorrow of my Blazer set up for ya. And a special pic of the harness as it's supplied, connected & I use.
Camera currently loaded with the remodeling shots from my other house project I'm doing. And the sun is setting now, too.
I'm glad that coil pic gives ya a laugh, but it's a perfect set up, "ghetto" or not! I used to live in the ghettos of South Philly (Temple University is located there). Belive me, my set up is high tech compared to what I recall in the "South Philly Ghettos!"

As offered.
Been there for over 100,000 miles
EXCPET When I pulled it to start the Firebird as that Fbird factory coil failed & I resorted to using this, "as one last attempt to start the Firebird".
And ACCEL PRODUCTS NEVER LET ME DOWN!
Everything comes with the Accel coil, harness, too.
As you can see, it just plugs into factory stuff like magic!
I LOVE ACCEL PRODUCTS & have for over 20 years!

Thanks for the pic, but sorry if I am not seeing something right. I can't see where <in my case 4> wires go from the engine harness to that coil.
Maybe it's just the angle of the pic.

It's there; look to the bottom left of the red trans dipstick tube. That last pic, of the Accel "computerized remote supercoil", came with a harness that plugged into the factory gray/black dual connectors.

Worst that can happen with a backwards-wired coil is bad performance at higher rpm's.

Didn't the 82-84's have the coil in cap?

Nope... Mounted in the same place for 83 and up... I'm not sure on the 82s though. However, given the lack of space, I'd say they are also remote mounted

I know my 84 is remotely mounted, over by/on the smog pump setup. As for the connecter AH okay now to find someone that sells Accel localy just in case it does not work out.

Thanks for the pic, but sorry if I am not seeing something right. I can't see where wires go from the engine harness to that coil.

MAN I figured it was so clear.
The Accel plug is wires to black end (Yes you see white spot, too)
Factory harness is the gray/black.
I laid it on top of the hose for clearer seeing the results.

NOW FUNNY BOY TOM!
Actually you can't goof up!
The factory plug block is "one way" set up. Plug connects one way, period.
The wires to coil can be goofed IF YA DON'T FOLLOW THEIR DIRETIONS!
The carb'd coil is as said, over the manifold, by the smog pump HOSE CONNECTION area. Same set up from 1982-82. And my 1985 Blazer, too.
The coil in cap is for the V-8 (starting in 1975 model year).
I know the 3.8 V-6 by Buick had the coil in cap, too. I worked on a 1980 Firebird with that set up. I AM NOT SURE about in-line Six's of the 70's.
Again, this coil has been preforming for over 100,000 miles.
YES TOM SET ON SIDE!
One of my first upgrades done on the Blazer & so worth it! I've owned this Blazer since 1989.
Glad this could inspire ya.
PS this coil fits behind the 3rd Gen distributor, easy. See that empty spot slightly right of the distributor, on firewall... take AWL poke holes thru firewall & screw into place. USE RUBBER BUSHINGS for vibration control.
