Any suggestions?

It's your choke pots not vacuum correct for operation.
The carb is a pretty much leave it alone model.
Once it's tuned right, it don't matter.
All other stuff controls the operation.
If that's all it does, be happy.
It's a beast to rebuild correct.
I've done it (primary shaft rebuild on base).
Those choke pots ain't cheap (like $40+ each).
You can check hoses ONLY IF they in original position & you have the hose road map on radiator support.
IF that ain't there & the hoses are a mess (not properly hooked up) gotta find that hose road map for better function and vacuum hose routing.
In those days (82-84, to 85 for my Blazer) GM put alot of bandaids to make the car smog legal.
Right now, I'm in process of rehooking up all my hoses on my Blazer.
Have all the smog things, & got a hose road map.
Off to the yard for the final small pieces.
I'm seeking out the FBody, Luminas cars like that for their carb/smog thingies/pieces, too.
They adapt over easy to my Blazer carb stuff.
Seek same engine drivetrain in other GM vehicles for your missing pieces or a smog sticker road map.

ok, i asked my neighbor about the problem and he also said that it is probally the choke. I have the vacuum diagram and the lines do look good. I guess i'll have to mess with the choke a little.

The choke is electric activated. Driver side cirle on carb thing with wire to it.
The choke pots control vacuum openings
There are two.
IF your diagram is good you can see what each does in function/operations.
Incidentally, just as ya see the hoses, doesn't always mean they are in good condition.
Good luck.
I gave up on mine working great.
I just drive poorly for a few moments no biggie
I also live in warmer climate, so I can accept that trade off.

Mine also runs like crap when cold. Oh KED, master of the varijet carbed car, my car has been getting better (would accelerate like turbo lag) but is still wanting to die if floored from a stop, but now has magically like 80% of previous power over the former 50%. Im thinking its more in the carb than timing right now. It backfired once the other day though, which its never done before. Oh well, maybe the secondaries werent opening right and now they are. Im looking at the carb next week in my garage where I actually have tools.

Oh KED, master of the varijet carbed car,
ALRIGHT I GOT A NEW TITLE!!!
If ya get it better GREAT!
These Varijets are pretty simple, just all those things hooked up for passing smog laws back then.
I have a bunch (5) of old 60's Rochester 2-bbl (2GC & 2G's) for building into a tripower setup for small block chevy.
Compared to those older carbs, these Varijet things.......
When my Varijet was rebuilt (2nd time), it just went back together & worked quite well.
We set the float level and didn't adjust much else.
I set the screws at about 2 1/2 turns out & that worked well for my set up.
I'm into visiting the yards for my few final parts for making my truck pass CA smog.
Before I go, I'll take it to a sensor & tune carb that way (by gas probe), if need to do so..
Only true way to set a carb, I've discovered.
Keep working on yours, tho.
Perhaps the person who did your work wasn't as through as you've become.
The work you're doing is only to your advantage for better performance & gas milage.
Hope you get it working better soon.
I know I must as I need my Blazer to work on the 2nd house I just bought.
