The Thunderbird was born in the 50's.
IT WAS NAMED FOR AN INDIAN SPIRIT IN PALM SPRINGS where the designer "drew" the design.
The original "Thunderbird" is still out there in Palm Springs, California.

NOW TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT

The 1955 Corvette was an ATTEMPT TO STEAL THUNDERBIRD SALES (the 265 V-8 was first in the 1955 Corvette.)
Ex-122 (the name assigned to the work order form from Chevy/GM brass THEN) was a 1954 Vette, with the V-8 engineered into the car.
The Corvette WOULD NOT BE CELEBRATING IT'S 50th ANNIVERSAY IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE COMPETITION OF THE THUNDERBIRD RELEASED IN 1955.
The FORD/CHEVY RIVALARY was JUST BEGINNING!
The 1957 FORD line outsold the 1957 Chevrolet line.
YET
Where are all the 1957 Fords?
SERIOUS!
They rusted away.
Literally that's why so few left over, EXCEPT in the Southwest states or what went elsewhere.
Serious.
Ford was notorious for rust problems, then.

Design
just like Beauty
is in the eye of the beholder.

Design wise, one is CORRECT to say, it looks like the old car.
Blazing new trails...
Show me a "new" design that's appealing.
Sing me a "new" song
Show me a "New" commercial
TELL ME A "NEW" IDEA!

Tough to make new standards...
PS I STILL AWAIT THE RETURN OF THE HOT PANTS LOOK!
LUCKILY WE HAVE HAD LOW RISE HIP HUGGER JEANS!
AND MICRO MINI SKIRTS
YES!

Where are you getting that info, I just watch the history channel special all about it yesterday and just what I said happned.

As the guy form wford who started the project explained, he got tiped off about the vett form a friend at gm, started working on it without permission, then had to put it in the cornor untill someone asked why dont we have a 2 seater program.

then some guy looked at his coffe cup and came up withe the name and symbol and he prise was a 250 dollar suiet, but they could not find anything like that in detriot, so he settled for a 125dollar suiet and 2 pairs of pants.

everything I said was true, unless tv lies. couldn't be.

I heard mine on the intro of the TBird (reissue).
It was a story told to a news reporter by the people whom still have their 1955 T Bird. It is (I THINK) 1955 T-Bird #1
Not having cable/sat I KNOW NOT THE STORY YOU SAY YOU HEARD.
I heard my story told by the people in Palm Springs whom helped "name" the car. And these folks explained why the name. It was named after a club IN PALM SPRINGS!!!! THAT WAS IT!!!!!!
The club was named after the PALM SPRINGS Indian Spirit! The LOGO is an INDIAN SPIRIT DESIGN, FORD APOPTED IT (imagine NO ROYALITIES! Like Shelby Cobra name!)

The Corvette was a dream car design inspired by the 1953 Spring Motorama intro in NYC. It was RUSHED TO MARKET (good response from the visitors), in later 1953. Designer is Harley Earl.
The 1955 V-8 Corvette is a direct result of the 1955 T Bird. As The T-BIRD is a V-8 powered ride (and the 1955 Chevy had the "first" V-8 (the 265)
EX-122 Corvette is still around.
IT IS ACTUALLY THE SECOND CORVETTE MADE IN the 1953 HAND MADE assembly line.
EX-122 is THE OLDEST CORVETTE IN EXISTENCE.
Yes Zora Arkus Dutov was the man whom created/engineered the 1955 V-8 Corvette.
Zora was hired in 1954 to work in GM engineering, by William (Bill) Mitchell.

I actually worked on a very special T-Bird.
It was a 1957 model sold to Frank Sinatra.
Just like the Corvettes, these cars "given/sold" to famous people/movie stars for the "image".
Franks T-Bird was special as it was SILVER.
NO Silver T-birds EVER FACTORY made (first three years).
Why Special?
Frank, Being FRANK SINATRA, wanted a STAND OUT COLOR.
He eventually sold it to a "hand" at Paramount studios. The person whom I helped (I was at the Beverly Hills car show in 2000 when this happened) told me this story as I helped prevent the electric window switch from shorting on the inner door panel, metal door trim.
The car was parked next to Rita Haywards car.
Later that year, Frank had passed.
The person I helped bought the car from the "Hand" at Paramount Stuidos.
The '57 Bird still had the original 1957 Ford Special Silver paint job.
It was an aged "cracked" paint by then, yet still shiny (laquer paint holds up well).
This person I helped bought the car in 1959. Yes, has had it since....
Yes, he was an elder gent & his lovely Wife, couldn't have been happier to have my simple help to solve the window shorting problem.
I grabbed black electrical duct tape from some cables on Rodeo Drive (site of the show), wrapped switch, inserted into door & short was gone! AND switch stayed in place, too!

It was a privlidge to touch such Hollywood history and to hear these stories from the source.
Not doubting your story Gumby, but, this is my tale. I think we're getting the facts "more" correct! LOL!

If interested, I can also tell ya the tale of Clark Gable and the 1950 Jaguar XK-120.
I have his pic in that car, pic given to me by the photographer, whom has passed (Roger Bartelow).
I love old Hollywood stories, one of the reasons I've enjoyed moving out west.
IF ya ever see an old "I love Lucy" the "Hollywood" episodes, look in background.
You'll see/notice a sign "Broadway/Hollywood" (also notice the Bank of America sign, too)
That's Hollywood & Vine.
I worked for 7 years, across from the Capitol Records building, in the background of that photo, during the 1980's. I have walked upon grounds where the Beatles have walked, many times.
Tales I've heard, facts I've discovered. Fun.
PS James Dean bought his "Lil Bastard" Porsche from a building in that photo, too. His star is in front of (the now gone) Hollywood Sports Car doors, where he drove out upon purchase.
AND Clark Kent changed into Superman in the alley of a building in that photo, too. Yes the OLD 50's TV show. "Daily Planet" building is in that photo, too.
So is The Brown Derby.

The Aston Martin that James Bond drives in GOLDFINGER (1963)?
I sat in one of the ORIGINAL movie cars (Obviously there were several) as a seven year old kid at the 1964 World's Fair in Queens NYC. The grenades are located under the drivers seats. I asked where they were & then felt them. Too much fun!
Green Hornets Black Beauty?
I sat in it at George Barris Studios across fromwher I once worked.
I eventually told George that story & he just smiled, very wide. His Wife came over to me later on same day me, told I had made his day with that story.
He loves hearing from his fans...
Never sat in the Batmobile, tho.
BELIEVE ME I'VE TRIED!

SUPPORT ANYTHING DETROIT PUTS OUT WITH REAL HISTORY.
It's all we got, until the time machine works better, then in our heads!

Well that club has some problems, they were interviewing the guy who did the Tbird, his car, his story. You cant get any closer to the truth than that. They even showed press pic from the news paper of the guy who won the contest for the name. now maybe that guy started that club??? but the idea came of a coffe cup.

Id like to know what kind of scam they are pulling down there; the t-bird is a vette ripe off.

Thunderbird
It was a sad day in 1997 when Ford announced plans to do the same thing as the infamous father in the Beach Boys' song--they were taking the T-bird away! One of the most celebrated American automotive icons, the Thunderbird stunned the world when it was released in 1954. Buyers ordered more than 3,500 of the sporty $2,600 T-birds in the first 10 days. But like the Phoenix, the T-bird refused to die. We chronicle the rise, demise, and rebirth of this icon as the new T-birds take flight in 2001!

you will just have to watch for it and see, I'd beleive them first than some place trying to make a buck off t-shirt sales.

No coke jokes ok!
The 1965 WAS STUNNING
The 1964 was a "BAND-AID" approach to get it to market FAST!

TACKY

Saying that really upsets me!
That's the LAST word that came to my mind in 1964!
My AUNT had a NEW 1965 GTO 4-Speed 389.
My Father had a NEW 1963 Grand Prix 421/Auto.
They used to race on Long Island back roads!!
My Cousin won SUPER STOCK DRAG RACES AT ATCO DRAGWAY with that 1965 GTO.
Until my Aunt found the trophy in the trunk one day!

The 1964 GTO and the 1963 Grand Prix were the FIRST execution of the "Coke" bottle body style.
This same "Styling" created the
1968 Charger
1968 Corvette.

TACKY
I assume you're not a "creative" design person....
Sorry have to really bounce this one back at ya
WHAT REALLY PISSES ME OFF ABOUT THIS GTO.
LOOK AT THE HOOD!

NOT EVEN A DECENT HOOD SCOOP! OR ANY HOOD SCOOP
I strongly assume the aftermarket boys wil fix that ASAP
I also firmly believe the exhaust will be corrected before it's inpublic hands.

IF I FELT LIKE IT,
I'd tell ya what I see of it inperson.
It's in LA auto show right now. I'm not a LA Freeway crowds fan & the TV viewing of auto show is just as good minus the crowds & driving & paying 4 parking.

WHAT I'M REALLY PISSED ABOUT IS
THE LAME 2003 50th ANNIVERSAY CORVETTE.
Wooppee!
Red paint-excuse me while I change my pants as I peed in excitment.
HELL THE CORVETTE WAS BORN WHITE EXTERIOR & RED INTERIOR . I KNOW I HAD and DROVE A 1954! (It was Blue & Tan, very rare).
IDIOTS!

I almost bought a 1964 GTO Tri-powered 4-speed Convertible w/wood wheel (Triple Black car). Guy wanted $5K in 1983. To much for me, then BUT VERY FAIR!
I picked up my 1967 RS/SS 350 Camaro Convertible 4-speed a few weeks later at only $3800, intact & very original. MY Camaro is now worth (READY?)
$118,800 (according to the USA today article of Aug 6, 2002).
I didn't make up that number.
Supply & demand.
Know any dealerships that have a new 1967 Camaro, still instock? I'll be there NOW!
I deduced that about 4-5% of the entire 1967 model year run were made to my Camaros' options & specs.
And I have the small block. Big block is 1-3% of the entire 1967 production. Yes a`67 Z-28 is less (only 602 made, period!).

The 1964 GTO is tacky looking.
PLEASE
RETRACT THAT!
PLEASE
RETRACT THAT!
I love GTO'S !!!!!!!
I got my R&T yesterday in the mail and on of the best pages in the mag is a tire ad with a blue gto in it .!!! That's ganna be hanging on the wall in my studio before long !!!!!!

As for as the 2003 vette , I had the same reaction as you Karl . I even had to look at the car again , - to make sure it was the anniversary model !!!! Then I was like ..well ...uh ...so what ...It just has 50th badges on it and chrome rims , but anyone can get the chrome rims on a vette !!!

THE THUNDERBIRD IS A DIFFERNT MARKET THAN IS CORVETTE.
THT WAS TRUTH IN 1955 & STILL TODAY
BACK IN the 50's, Ford MADE A LUXURY SPORTS CAR
BACK IN The 50's CHEVY MADE AN AMERICAN AFFORDABLE SPORTS CAR.
AND THE T BIRD IS AN IMAGE VEHICLE FOR THE GLOW CAST UPON ALL FORD VEHICLES. It "brings ya to the showroom!"

Gumby the story ya heard is a very interesting one.
I wish I saw it.
I wonder if the producer of MY STORY (Huell Howser) as seen it, too.
I ALSO have disputes with the FACTS STATED in latest Rolling Stones interview seen on "60 Minutes, 2"

THE REASON OF THE PALM SPRINGS BIRTH OF THE T BIRD IS
the "Gentlmen & Women" of SOCIETY as potential buyers.
NEVER EVER DID FORD "CREATE" A "SPORTS CAR".
It was a luxury convertible (can you say Mercedes, the 300 series & 300 Gullwing).
That "Mercedes" was the FORD competition.

The FIRST YEAR OF T BIRD REDESIGN
The "squarebird" Four Seater model
OUT SOLD ALL previous 1955, 1956, 1957 T-Bird SALES COMBINED.
The 1958-60 T-BIRD Model run WAS EXTENDED (as like the 1969 Camaro).
FORDS REASON
TO FILL ALL THE PRESOLD BACK ORDERS of the 1960 model year vehicle.
AND THE 1958 (TBird model year sale) WAS A BIG USA ECONOMIC RECESSION YEAR.
ALL/ANY MAKE USA VEHICLE SALES STUNK!!

We all know 1969 Camaro was extended model year run, due to UAW labor strike.
This situation created the
1970 1/2 Camaro model RELEASED TO PUBLIC FOR SALE IN LATE JAN 1969.

FORD MUSTANG "REDESIGN"(GREAT WORK!!)
Won't fly.
WHY
AERODYNAMICS.
But Kj Rockz, your work is truly right on!
Very well done!
Keep developing your design skills ("eye").

Wayne, the aftermarket is getting ready for the proper "GTO" Styling touches.

CAN ONE IMAGINE A "GTO" FIGHTING THE FERRARI GTOS AT LEMANS (As theh Corvettes & Caddys do now!).
IT WAS THAT "LEGENDARY FIGHT/BATTLE"
PONTIAC GTO vs FERRARI GTO
article that
MADE CAR & DRIVER MAGAZINE.
That story article issue was the "made it" point for keeping C & D ALIVE.
Promise if you read C & D, you'll be seeing that article shorlty.
Even the R & T mag will mention that article, shortly soon.

Those of us, here, that were there back then, can't say enough, how much fun it was, to watch the world happen.
Beatles, Beach Boys, Frankie & Annette Surf Movies, California Girls, Space Walks, faster cars, manufacturing rivalaries, Woodstock, EASY SEX (thanks birth control pills!!), MOON WALKS to just touch the surface what went on in the 60's.

Just read about a Ford Focus with a 302 stuffed in it.
So?
BUT THAT's BASED UPON the VEGA GETTING V-8 & the Pinto getting V-8's.
IF YOU DO HAVE THE LATEST HOT ROD,
Look at back page about the VAN CRAZE.
See that?
Yep, that was me.
I created my own "Sport Utiltiy Vehicle" before the name was "made".
Mine was a 1963 Buick Special wagon, aluminum V-8, tricked out (curtains, inside wood paneling, stereo 4 speaker system with fader)! I went to see "Barbarella" (when it was released to movie public) at the Quakertown drive-in (Rt 309) but never saw the movie!
Drove VANS, too. (Philly to Pittsburgh, PA TURNPIKE middle of winter, me, speed shifting 3 on the tree Ford Econline Van, full of 3 horny guys & beer/"illegal things", to visit one guys sister at Clarion college a 6 hour drive, drive started at 11PM!)
You guys missed SO MUCH SIMPLE FUN!
KEEP ENJOYING ANY FUN YOU MAKE FOR YOURSELF, everyday.
WHEN YOU HEAR "(YOUR CURRENT AGE) KIDS", IN THE FUTURE SAY THINGS.. you tell them about now.
Pass it along, "share the "wealth"
This is almost truly the second coming of the "Golden Age".
NOTHING like "Camelot" of the 60's, tho.
Where have you gone, JFK, RFK, MLK, Joe Dimaggio....

I honestly can't imagine how they'd style a 5th gen F-Body...but I bet it'll be smaller. I just hope they don't f*ck it up like they did for Gen 4 and make it a big, nondistinguished blob. Needed some edges to it. Ground FX kits solved the Camaro looks problem right off the bat. Add a hood and some nice pipes out the back, and you're doin great! But GM didn't have the sense to give them ground fx from the factory, except the very limited 4th gen RS runs. Only 4th gens I TRULY liked are the 2002 SS's...everything else is too bland. T/A's are a whole nother story though.

Thansk for putting tha tlink up.
I wonder if C&D website has the article of my Cousin's 1949 MGTC?
I have the mag, just wondering...
Does the C & D webiste have the GTO article they ran in the mid 70's, too?
Yeah that was the car I was gonna buy
Trips, power convertible, gauges, wood wheel & 4-speed.

The GTO in the article is a "B" Pillar GTO (window framed on drivers door).
It's the lightest example of an "A" body car one could buy, the drag racing special.
PLUS is was a more rigid car, cause of framed windows on the door.
Royal Bobcat was one special dealership.
Same level as Mr Norm's for Chrysler stuff & Baldwin Motion Motors, South Gate Chevy (out west in LA), Nickey Chevrolet, Yenko, all those great names for/from the fun days of performance.

I think that the new GTO is a disgrace to the GTO. Yeah nice interior, remind when the GTO was a luxury car though, and o yeah the name should be Pontiac GTO(grand am). My opinion is that if Pontiac decided to take on the challenge of remaking the GTO, I think that they should go with the stacked headlights, like the pioneer GTO from 1964!

Wow...you rock dude... No wonder the first comment I read from you before was on how crappy my digital camera is when I posted a photo....you're a graphic designer, you know that stuff! Got a recommendation for a digital cam under $150? That $100 Agfa..I've had it..it's a piece of crap and barely works now.

It's kinda hard to get a good one for under 150. But for 200-250 you can get some pretty good ones.

Anything that is above 2.0 megapixles should be good.

I get kinda picky on photos, sorry bout that.
