Replace the Oil Pan

I am getting ready to replace the oil pan on my 92 Camaro 3.1 liter. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to go about doing this. I know I have to jack the engine up. But do I have to take the hood off and use a engine puller or can I just jack the motor up with a floor jack. Anyone who has done this on their 3.1 I would apperciate some advice.

I think it would me MUCH easier to pull hood and do hoist, so jack wont be in way while your under the ride. Plus not to many floor jacks will jack that much. Hosit would be more stable also.

I have had mine replaced. I didn't do it myself because I had my left hand in a cast at the time. they had to lift the engine with a hoist. i think that they had to lift it about 4 or 5 inches in the front so that the pan would come out. I had run over a big rock and knocked a small hole in the pan. I got one out of the junkyard for a 2.8 liter, but it was warped and wouldn't fit right. I ended up paying 90 bucks for a new one from GM. They put that in, and I had them change the distributor O ring too. My car doesn't leak anymore.

You could use a floor jack, but you would have to use a wood block with a v cut in it, and put it on the balancer, or something like that so it wouldn't be in your way. You could have someone weld the hole up if it isn't too big. I thought about doing that, but my pan was dented really bad, so I went on and changed it out.

Do you know how much you paid for the labor to install the oil pan? I need to have that done on my 83 (it leaks up front) and I'm too lazy to hoist the engine for a fourth time.

Think either way your gonna have to remove the motor mounts.

you cn use a floor jack either way also, use wood or brick to raise the jack so it have enough lift to lift the engine on the crank pully, or put a couple 2x4 or what every across the engine bay, and use a piece of chain and your floor jack again.

the board holds the jack steady and flat over top the engine, loop the chain around the jack and jack away n lift the motor.

floor jacks works great as a lift, if your not going very high.

I beleive it was about 350 dollars labor. I had to do this at the time, because I had been in a wreck and totalled my truck. My car was all that i had to drive, and I had also broken my hand in the wreck. That was a double whammy. Anyway, other than the oil leaks, the car had always run good. That was more than a year ago, and I still don't have any leaks.

Well, 350 to put the pan in isn't too bad. I got an extra pan I can use off the original motor so that'll save in parts.
