Help me turn my laptop into a scanner
My car has some problems, but it doesn't set codes so I would like to read my ECM using my laptop.
I have made this interface;
http://www.techedge.com.au/vehicle/aldl160/aldl_hw.htm
unfortunatly my H aldl terminal is blank (refer to circuit diagram from above link), so i'm using an external 12v power source.
I tried to use this software
http://www.customefis.com/winaldl.html
it has a setting for 1986 2.8l that doesn't seem to do anything for me. I have an 87 V6, the engine block says 1986, the balancer is marked like an 86, but it has the 87 single belt setup.
My ecm service number is 1227322 for which i have found no reference to on the net.
I'm stuck
Any 87 owners out there who have done this succesfully?
I could use some insight.
I don't have a max232 chip kickin around so I don't really want to try a different interface. I think the problem is software realated.

Are you sure the previous owner didn't just swap the serpentine belt onto your '86 engine? I wonder if maybe your car was made very late in '86, and GM did an early conversion to it.
I didn't even know that pin H supplied 12 volts; all the interfaces I've seen used an external 12 volt supply. You could ask a guy on the prom board (and sometimes here), named funstick, about that ECM number. Can WinALDL handle a 160 baud link (from the '86 computer)?
Sorry I can't help more, I've always wanted to try this, but never got around to it... dumb, because that's why I bought those two 386sx16 laptops a few years ago. Oops.

Go to this site:
http://www.winaldl.webhop.net/
That is the homepage for the WinALDL software. On that page, there is a link that says "Click here for instructions on how to build an interface cable" - click that link. On the resulting page ("160 Baud ALDL Hardware Interface") there are two diagrams. The first one looks like it is really close to the cable you have. The second diagram is the one that I used and is the one that I know works, and it does not require a H pin to be present on the ALDL connector - only pins A, B, and E - this cable design uses the DTR pin on the serial port for the 12V source (pin 4 on 9 pin ports).
I've been using this cable with WinALDL for some time now and have been very happy with being able to use it as a diagnostic tool.
(Quick note: A 10K resistor (R3 in the diagram) is shown between the A & B pins on the ALDL connector (places it in ALDL diagnostic mode). To avoid having to hook up the wires and the resistor every time, I took a 10K an soldered it to the pin5/emitter joint and ran a wire down to pin B on the ALDL connector. This way it is all in the serial connector casing and I only have to hook up 3 wires.)

Linux guy;
What was your ECM number? Mine doesn't apear on your link's supported ecm types. what year is your car?
Tomp;
possible, i know my car was built in 86 via the build sheet; also what i think is the root of my problems. I rebuilt my engine as an 87, the 86 rebuild kit is different number. I hope lto earn a bit more from the scanner. And hopefully after alot of learning to be able to burn a custom chip or get someone to do it for me and for me to know whats going on when they do it (to compensate for whatever differences between 86-87). I'm not even sure if this is an issue yet, that what i hope to find out.... somehow.
My car is Canadian (no smog pump, etc.) and has a cold start injector if that helps anyone.
My car is also in my buddies garage because i was too loaded to get home
SNOW=TEMPTATION= new quarter panel mashed into parked car.
more comments?

I have a 1987 Camaro 2.8L Sport Coupe and a 1989 Camaro 2.8L RS.
I have never looked at the ECM number in the '87. The '89 is using a 1227302.
I have used WinALDL with both cars without any problems. The 1986 2.8 litre MPI setting works fine with both of my Camaros.
"has a cold start injector if that helps anyone. "
The MPFI 2.8L engines in the thirdgen Camaros and Firebirds all had a cold start injector through 1989. In 1990 the 3.1L replaced the 2.8L and the cold start injector went with it.

Okay, looks like I'll try to build the interface that works for linux guy. If that doesn't work I know to I gotta search hard for a program that lists my ECM or fiquire out if someone swaped in an interchangable ECM.
anyhow thanks, thats what I needed to know, I'll let you know how it goes.
for some reason I thought only 87-89 had the cold start, I know I'm wrong now that I think about it.
The wierd thing is now that it's below 10*C, the car runs better than ever, no shaking/surging and it idles calmly in drive at 600rpm and it's generaly much faster and responsive and the exhaust smells/sounds healthy This is pointing me towards my MAF or mat sensor, which are both new or it could be the O2 sensors which could possibly have 230,000km on them.
Thanks all

If you do have 230,000 KM on your O2 sensor, I'd change it just for piece of mind. Usually they should be changed every 50,000 miles (83,000 KM)

I still have yet to find anyone who has run diag tools like WinALDL on a 3.1L.... I can get the cable and the program no problem, and I have a laptop, but I am not sure if it would work or not... It's nice that the program is free though!!

This will tell you how to build your own cable for the ALDL connection.
But if you would like to buy one you can buy an ALDL cable at the following locations online:

and

Check list for scanning your ECM
- Your laptop
- The interface cable with/without power source (it depends if the laptop can't be used as a power source. Some laptops only produces 5V power. Too low).
- If required: a power source 12V @ cig. lighter or a 9V battery with switch on/of (my cable). This is a "chilean design" based on a little search about this circuit by a friend who is electronic enginner (his conclussion was: 12V = too many heat on the transistor, you only needs 9v). My cable works very good in my canadian car.
- The scanning diagnostic software compatible with your specific datastream (remember: you only scann the ECM, no the motor).
An ECM number can has differents bins + differents datastreams. --For scann you only needs know the datastream.
-For burn your PROM you needs know the bin.
