Deep basslike exhaust
Ok this is my last question on Exhaust hopefully.
I want nice deep bass-like muffler.
I want a sound like the ricers have at lower rpms(the deep sound). I dont want a fart can.
I dont want extremly loud, I want deep.
Dont flame.
What muffler does this?

the pipes before my muffler are not crimped, but they are 2.25".

yeah the mufller with the catback is the super turbo. it has a real nice sound to it, especially when you get on it. but at idle it has a nice little rumble

yeah the mufller with the catback is the super turbo. it has a real nice sound to it, especially when you get on it. but at idle it has a nice little rumble
The way you describe it is about what I am looking for - something that does not roar REALLY loud, but is deep, sounds good under semi-hard to hard acceleration, can be heard in the background when I am at cruising speeds (but be easily overcome by the radio or conversation), and has a nice glug-glug-glug during idle. Kind of like the system on my '87 2.8L Camaro (it is the exhaust that was on it when I bought it, can not tell who made it). The stock system on my '89 RS right now is too quiet, barely any deepness to it (a little when I am accelerating), and when it is idling it has kind of a buuuuuhhhh or bvvvvv rather than glug glug glug or lum lum lum. (LOL! Trying to put sounds into words is funny! It's not very easy!)

All of the major brands will sell a muffler that will bolt up to stock piptes.....flowmaster, dynomax, and hooker. Its just deciding which you want....and thats the hard part

Redraif has a Flowmaster on her car...sounds great to me. People often think its a V8, though her car does sound better than others I have heard with the same muffler. Maybe the 4 tips have soemthing to do with it.

The I-pipe position hangs on a few things... first off, the exhaust manifolds. The y-pipe is held on at 3 points- each exhaust manifold, and the cat. The y-pipe can "swing" the cat up towards the floor or down towards the road, because it hinges off the manifolds.
Then, you can bolt your i-pipe to the cat in such a manner that it angles the exhaust system up. This will effectively "lower" the muffler a bit in the back. If you lower the i-pipe near the cat, it raises the muffler in the back.
So when you do the cat-back, leave the i-pipe-to-cat bolts loose, and play with the i-pipe to get a good angle. TIP: Make the tailpipes level with the ground. This lowers the tips to the ground, BUT, you can't slide a tip over the dynomax slash-cut tailpipes. Dynomax "ovals" the slash-cut ends. If you cut the slashes off the ends of the tailpipes, right before they angle down, you get a true 2.5" round pipe that a tip will slip over.
And I think basically, any exhaust will sound the same- as long as you keep in mind that we don't have a V8 under the hood. You'll get "loud", but it will never be "V8 loud". I've been mistaken for a v8 before, too, with the Dynomax. I just prefer Dynomax, mainly because every other damn kid in my town has Flowmaster. So I bolted it on, and loved the sound.

So I dont think I am going to get a cat back, My pipes look new, I think I will just buy a muffler. But the only Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler that has 2.25" inlet/ 2 x 2.25" outlet is the Mustang muffler. I need to see a pic of this muffler to where the 2 outlets come out, So I can see if I can get it to work on my car.
Also If I dont buy the cat back, I will have enough money for tailpipe tips, A small tach (which I need, I have the lights) I'm just getting a small 2.5" to 3" tach.
Then I will have extra cash for other things.

I might goto the Junk yard and find some rims off a 3rd gen, Do you guys ever see rims on cars ? If they are rusted out, I will just polish them, I will take any rims beside the ones I have now.

I did a stock cat-back for a friend with a 91 formula. They gave him a 2.25" i-pipe, and a 2.5" inlet muffler. I went back and said "uh, wrong parts!" He said there should be adapters in the muffler box, I said no... he gave me an opened bag of 'em. They looked like letter C's. They'd slide over the 2 1/4 pipe, and enlarge it to the next size. So you'd slide the end of the i-pipe, which had the adapter on it, into the muffler. It wasn't like any other adapter I'd ever seen... most adapters are 5 inches long, this thing didn't add any length to the pipe. Don't know what they're called, maybe you can ask around (or ask the exhaust forum guys)? The bag had a ton of them in there... but most were tiny, like, for an import car's pipes. Just an idea...

Ah ha! Bitchin'! Found it- "reducing bushings". From the dynomax website: http://www.dynomax.com/documents/byo.pdf (might want to right-click on it, and save it to your hard disk first, the website is too frickin' slow.) Look on the last page. I believe you'd need #35256 and #35257. You'd slide #35256 onto the end of your 2.25" i-pipe. Then you'd slide #35257 over #35256. Then you'd slide all three, i-pipe and both adapters, into the muffler, and use a stainless steel clamp. (Stainless steel = stronger than the cheap steel clamps so you could really tighten the clamp down STRONG.)

Thanks for all the advice, And can I just weld everything or not? I can weld believe it or not.. I'm 15 lol. Took welding in school.
Its an arc welder though so welding thin gauge metal might be tricky.

flowmasters sound great
I had a set of flowmasters put on a couple of months ago when I tore up my converter and my 89 RS 2.8 sounds incredible, gives it a very deep rumbling sound, very gutsy and aggresive yet refined at idle, I really enjoy the way it sounds. Then again yours and my definition of "farty sounding" may be substantially different.

the part number on the Dynomax muffler box is 17739 w/2.5" all around. yes still in box. willfire this sucker up either with open y-pipe, or w/convertor that came with it.
crossflow? just one entrance & two opposed exits for exhaust. it's the same syle muffler as the 70 1/2- 81 2nd gen f-body cars.
mike1986fyrbird, maybe you should save the muffler money for some tires instead?

I just put a flow 50 series camaro style muffler on today and I LOVE IT $72 from summit. I am gonna try to get some sound clips of it tomarrow.
SAEspinz80 sent me a clip of the Hooker Aerochamber and it sounds pretty good. However, I would really like to hear some clips of the Flowmaster exhausts (50 and 80), and would especially like to hear a clip of the popular Dynomax Super Turbo. I've search the V6 board for sound clips for it, but every clip is a link to an external site, and the links are dead.
Thanks for any clips, and Camar_Hunter_c, can't wait to hear clips of you Flowmaster, you sound quite pleased!

better pic to actually see the tires whats wrong w/the Raley II wheels? part of that pontiac heritage . The bonnie has them, my 77 T/A had them. Factory 5 star ya know
if ya really don't like, put them up in the classifieds. I think they are the small bolt pattern (4 1/2 or 4 3/4). Just go to the junk yard, match up the bolt hole numbers & the bolt pattern. make shure the rims you get are the same diameter of your current ones to reuse the tires.

What kind of arc welder do you have? Look up deadbird on the body/interior board, he used an arc welder to put a 1/4 panel on. It's in my long 1/4 panel message, https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=108890 . He told me what kind of welder he uses and what rods. And sheetmetal's thinner than exhaust pipe, so I think you'd be good.

you can get your aprenticship from school.
I'm also taking electrical 10 20 30a 30b.
we have construction too, Machineing also, I took that, and we have a huge lathe in the garage.

I'd love to have all those classes. It's not too bad here, I've got it set so I only have to take two classes senior year, so I get 6 periods for welding, auto mechanics, and a few more fun things.
