I feel a bit dumb, but I did it my way...

I've had this problem with my 1985 Firebird.
Almost ever since I owned it.
Sometimes, it wouldn't shut off.

To shut off car, I popped off the coil wire.
THEN to shut off fuel pump flow or juice to the car, I'd disconnect battery.
Eventually the car would "cycle" itself to just be normal, sometime after a few moments of battery disconnect, to overnight. What I mean is the dash indicator SES lights would stay on, radio would be powerless, off, tho. It was weird, possessed...

The other day I got my new car battery, and this not shutting off problem appeared with a vengence.
I had replaced the steering column ignition switch.
I had replaced the ignition modular-again!!
After crawling thru the pick your part & U pick parts, getting three computers, choosing one (& spying a perfect rear bumper cover!) and installing the computer in the parking lot..
I give up.
Still the car wouldn't shut off normal.

I go to this mechainc I TRUST.
He sees me after I've been in the yard (it was a 100* there to day!).
Car interior plastic all over....
He searches my engine bay.
He hears me.
He checked steering column part.
Not adjusted. Nope was just fine. Next...
I have my Helms book opened to the factory wiring schematics.
Something is crossing somewhere.
He follows the positive battery wire, to....
the junction box infront of my air inlet box, passenger side by the IAT sensor.
He touches the wires on a junction block and relay...
3 of the 4 wires are frayed 1 1/2" back from plug and crossed.
He pulls, untwists wires, problem solved.....

My car now flies fast, sits in traffic with the AC on full blast, not overheating & I love it.
AND THEN when I leave the car, it'll be shut off now.

Always check wiring and find more wiring then you thought you had. That's where lots of problems lie.

He charged me a 12 pack of Coronas!

After having my brain fried in the heat, I was smart enough to find a higher source of knowledge.
Should I have gone to him first?
Honest, IF I DIDN'T TRY.....
If he was just around the corner (I had to drive 25 miles to this guy).......
The yards were on the way....
Thought I'd pass this along.

This one San Fernando Valley Pick Your Part (next to Memory Lane) yard is having a 20% off sale very soon. I THINK I RECALL July 20th?
I need that rear bumper.
Now to just find a nose & fender, too

Sometimes problems are just too tough to figure out. I know firsthand, it gets VERY frustrating. You got it fixed though.

Hey, it was SIZZLING today. Funny you mention that SFV Pick-A-Part.....that's where I threw-up last summer after getting dehyrdrated while pulling a trans.

Like Dan said (Dan being a mechanic) and I have heard my Grandfather and other mechanics say " sometimes problems are just hard to find ! " . Dad is taking his car into the shop this morning for an electrical gremlin . Courtesy lights stay on after he gets out of the car without turning off , then they just mysteriously turn off . They usually dim real slow and turn off after he shuts the door .

Karl , what kinda miniv*& you looking at ?

what kind of car does you dad have? Alot of cars have that option. My jeep grand cherokee does that because it is programed to do that.

Wayne,
you'll learn this.
Let them look atlot.
Keeps them busy.

Astro van is what I'll get as it's a full frame & can haul & be used. Safest.
I have old motorcycles to transport.
I had vans in the 1970s.
WAS WAY FUN
Try speed shifting a 1965 Ford Econvan 6 cylinder three on the tree, Philly to Clarion, PA, night time run, PA turnpike, middle of winter, no heater & full of beer, to see this guys sister & her girlfriends at college. One roomie was cute.

Best was viewing Blue Ridge Parkway, side door open, peak fall of 1978, new girlfriend.

Have memories & I don't want that "thing" in my driveway.
Make me feel like I had my ***** cut off to even say that word.

Only thing from the 70's I'll have are my old 1972 & '76 Honda motorcycles & the old 1974 Corvette, thank you!

It is always good to get help from someone smarter. This weekend I'm driving the Bird down to see if my grandfather has any ideas about the engine vibes. At 85 years old he is probably the smartest person I know. Hopefully I can finish the paint job and get my bumper/lights/interior back together. It would be great to drive the Bird again!

Hey Wayne, It sounds like the lights are supposed to do that. My 90 Vette and my Mom's Grand Am both do that. I think my Dad's 86 Vette also does that but I can't remember, I haven't driven it for awhile.

Wayne, my dad's Grand Prix GTP has lights that do that. Also, the guy before me had an aftermarket rear-view mirror installed, with lights on it, that do that too. I though I had left them on at first and every night when i got out of the car I'd sit there for a few minutes to make sure they turned off.
