building up a 60* V6
call me a fu(king hypocrit
look at my FREE MOTOR post
i am taking one and building it up for my 1991 RS
what i would like to know is:
head CC of FWD motors as compared to RWD head CC on 60* V6 engines
reason i ask is becasue this motor has like 9.3:1 compression
i want to try to maintain that if i can
i studied the engines at work today..............the intake manifold is *** backwards
i MITE try to get the FWD intake and heads to work........
i am only going to do this though as long as my ECM doesnt require any PROM changes............it prolly will though
so i am going to buy a set of RWD heads and an intake
i think i mite take the RWD heads to a machine shop and have them shaved a little for a little more comp
then i am going to add a nice Crower cam
and some roller rockers
all i can see that stands in the way is that the starter is on the wrong side
now i can either take it to a machine shop and have it put on the other side or.............i can cut into my bellhousing somehow........................
opinions thoughts..........
(lets be nice, i'm not really doing this for all out ***** to the wall performance, i want to screw around a little and some more power from my daily driver cant hurt)

Car: 1983, 1986
Engine: 2.8 2bbl, 2.8 MPFI
Transmission: 200C 3 speed, 700R4
Axle/Gears: 3.08, 3.42
The reason the new motor has over 9:1 compression is because of the combustion chamber/valvtrain geometry (splayed valves). RWD heads may work if they are substantially reengineered due to the fact that the CC needs to be made heart shaped and the valve geometry need to be made to match the FWD heads due to the different piston design. RWD intakes will not work with FWD heads due to the fact that the FWD heads have three equally spaced ports and the RWD are siamesed. Maybe one could adapt the upper plenum to the FWD intake? I accidently put my lower plenum on backwards and the ports lined up. The primary reason most say the computer would need replacing is because the FWD motors are DIS ignition. However there is a plug for the distributor (right under the plenum). I think if the lower plenum could be modified/fabricated to put the top from a Camaro on top, it should work with the previously mentioned starter hole drilling. I would have the block modified for the starter becase if the bellhousing was modified the nose of the starter would still face the wrong way

don't abandon the sixty degree build up just cuase of the FWD engine. Sell those three, use the money to build up a 3.4 like karl.
These 3.4 run 160 HP stock and 200 lbs of torque ...
where your LG4 only ran 170 HP stock and 250 lbs of torque (don't know what you've done to it)
... not that far behind ... besides its fuel injected, where is LG4 is carbed ...
Add a Crower Cam, 1.6 rockers, you know the drill ...
These 60 *s can compete ...
Don't give up on the 60* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
< ------- Trying to be nice, since you have been thanks for being nice in one of my posts...

no problem stuart
i just get pissy with people when they jump on MY back for giving MY opinion
these V6's though are almost at max capacity............
191CID and 140 HP
thats .73 HP per cubic inch
my LG4:
305CID and 170HP
thats .55 HP per cubic inch
now i realize that more power can be made, but after that 1 HP per Cubic Inch, its doesnt get that easy making it natuarlly aspirated
so far my 305 has: edelbrock performer intake and 600 CFM carb, ALL emissions gear removed, mildy worked stock heads, and a compcams 252 (relativly mild)
it HAD a 700R4 and a 2.73 rear
MSS(moderator of street racing forum), who i bought the car from
said he ran a 14.8 with that setup
the T5 i am putting in has a 3.75(approx) first gear where as the stock 700R4 had a 3.35 (approx)
i am also putting in a 3.23 rearend i have sitting in my backyard
soooooooooo i am hoping for mid-low 14's from my setup
i have heard of 305's getting into the 12's..........not easy but can be done
quickest i've heard for a N/A V6 (60* of course) is 14.9
with NOS it was about a 13.9
thats quick...........but costed the builder alot of money
i dont have alot of money, so unfortunatley i cant really fool around with my V6 right now (its also my daily driver)
so i pulled $600 out of the bank and bought the Z28
it needed: new tranny, paintjob, headers, and a vacuum advanced distrib
right now i have less than $1500 into this car.................i have all the parts i need to get it running, but i havent installed the tranny nor the rearend yet...........tranny should go in about a week or two.........rear end.....................a few monthes.............
so for $1500 i have a nice 14 second car that needs a $800 paintjob which is comming next
all in all, i'll have probally spent less than $5000 when i'm 100% done with the Z28.........and by that time it will be running low 13's/ high 12's (not nessacerilly with a 305 though)
thats my way of logical thinking
i'm glad you understand my point of view a little bit better

once my 184,000 mile 3.1 gives up, i'm going to invest in a brand new 3.4 longblock and add a cam and rockers
eventually i would like add a turbo and maybe even convert to a 700R4, so i can have a wicked daily driver
but i dont have the time nor the money right now.....................

Here's how ya do the engines
Phone local trucking places
Will end up on a palet, strapped, for shipping, minus fluids.
People do this all the time.
NOW you can go backwards.
Go to ebay
Ask those people how they ship their engines?
Don't you dare throw away good money.
Storage is the key!
OR Phone around to wrecking yards & swap those three Or two) for one 3.4
MAN YA GOTTA BE CREATIVE.
I'm attempting to buy a very (to me) expensive home in BH for investment.
Think I won't be financially creative to be able to cash in on the profit I'll attain in the end?
Before property tax is due.....
You'll attain it.
Start asking.
PS IF ya had the GM Performance Parts Book you would have seen the pics & known instantly what will work, not work, even if given to ya....

Everyone keeps forgetting about the 4.3 v6. biggest Gm v6 on the block. s10 and monte carlos had them. you can go carbed or mpfi or some other crazy one with a giant injector/or somethin. Just as much work as a 305. but lighter, better, will be faster. espically if your looking to do a engine swap with a t5 stick.
lots of 4.3 parts out there. its just a 350 missing the two back cyls.

I read all the posts with intrest - I've long been following the sideways engine thing - It's just not a 'practical' swap, it just doesn't make sence to go to the extra trouble - thats why I'D LIKE TO DO IT sometime - if I get a cheep (free) FWD mill.
Right now, being broke, I spend my time building engines - ON PAPER - & looking for a daily driver - trying to restore a car while you're driving it is just a little nuts.
Best luck! with your new ride.

Hey Teal, I am buying a motor for my lil Geo metro used and the guy is shipping it from Tennessee via UPS ground. Shipping to NE Maryland -- 25 bucks. Can't beat it. Just tell the winning bidder that they are responsible for paying for shipping as well. Although there is always a possibility of a modded 3.1 celebrity!

I offered my best ideas for making the money.
It's up to you to sort thru the fog & see what works best for ya.
Swapping those three for one ain't a bad deal.
Have to find willing partners.
You can easily attain this goal by asking and investigating....
Easily......
How long, that's diff.
