CAI and Forged Pistons
This is a combo post..figured I'd take up less space this way. First, I want to do CAI in combination with the Dynomax cat-back. Ohh, and a converter too. Dynomax has a converter but it's wicked expensive..Catco makes cheaper ones. What would you guys recommend? And how about for Cold Air Induction? I'm looking on Summit but all I can find on the net is damn ***** kits. And last question...I have a 91 3.1 liter. Forged pistons or no? [I want to know if it's safe to run a small NOS system]. Thanks as usual.

I'm pretty sure you do... 88-up 2.8's got forged pistons, so I imagine the same piston was used in the 3.1's. I asked about nitrous and it's effects on cast pistons a lonnnng time ago on the Power Adders board; the agreement seemed to be that as long as you're not running a super powerful shot, a cast piston would be fine. That's good news for me; a set of forged pistons is +$300! Cast pistons is about $100. If I had a v8 and forged were $300, I'd spend it, but personally, I can't spend that much for my V6.

Tom,
Every GM performance parts book I have never mentions these little V-6's have forged pistons.
Please name your source.
I definetly say, every 60* V-6 has cast pistons.
WHY would GM spend the money?
Even my 1995 3.4 has cast pistons.
From all information I've ever seen, no forged pistons from a factory 60* V-6 engine.
I CAN SEE the aftermarket tubro engines from ASC of maybe the DOHC 3.4, common these thing engines?
Cast.
NOS?
Sure!!
CALL THE MANUFACTURE AND CHECK WIT THEM!.
THEY KNOW THE SCORE.
They don't want to sell you their product (a $500+ investment) and hear about how you blew up your engine with to much gas!
Not good PR to potential customers.
50+ HP is good to start!
Have you installed a new timing chain first?
How about rebuild distributor?
Those projects really wake up an engine over 75K miles!
Not that expensive, either!
Maybe $150 & effort!

The "Rebuild your 60 degree V6" book, by Tom Currao, says that in '88, the 2.8 received lighter, "lathe-turned" pistons. I don't see why they'd turn a piston on a lathe if it was cast, so it's gotta mean forged.
Oops, actually, looks like it was in '89. Here's my original message: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...threadid=60567

No on a new timing chain..and no on a new/rebuilt distributor. All I've done with ignition is have my starter rebuilt cause it burned out. Rebuilt distributor huh? Think mechanics are gonna charge me out the @$$ for that? I tried to replace my smog pump today and got into deep sh*t. There's a back plate to it that's bolted on, and there's no way in HELL you can get a ratchet back there. And you can't pull the pump off without getting the back plate off, cause it's covered in hoses. And my...whatever it was..little plastic crap, maybe the thermostat..and its hoses were in the way. I could barely get 2 fingers in there. ***, computerized engines SUCK. Ok, so...I'm apprehensive about doing much else for engine work right now. I think I'd be better off doing an easier project first..exhaust maybe. That's for later though..that comes after this smog pump and a brake job and rotor turning..assuming mine are still good enough to be turned out. And I'll definitely call around for NOS kits for Third Gen V-6 FBodies. I'd just like to know definitely whether I have cast or forged..because the forged can handle a substantially bigger NOS hit right? But hey..50 horsepower for flipping a switch is just fine by me!! Ohh, what about my fuel injection? I've heard about people having to convert to..what was it called..Direct Injection? Something like that. Am I going to have problems with my MPFI?

Guess you can kinda tell I'm pissed off about that pump huh? Well, it's the fact that I have to pay $100 now that's pissing me off.

Oh, man, you don't want to run nitrous on an engine that's in poor shape...
And why not rebuild the distributor yourself? The "how to" has been mentioned about 50 times on this board.
I betchya that little plastic crap you're talking about is the heater control valve.. I'm glad my '86 doesn't have one, and if it did, I'd rip that stupid easy-to-break POS off.
I've never heard of direct injecton... what's that? Our injectors spray right into the intake manifold; I don't think you can get any more direct than that.

I'd rebuild the distributor if it didn't require too much know-how. I just get worried about screwing things up, because with cars, at this stage, I'm barely competent. I haven't even changed my own d*mn oil yet..but I plan to do that soon. Those places rip you off so bad... And I dunno about the Direct injection thing..I think I remember hearing that term a lot for NOS stuff. It might be a name for a group of injection methods that Nos works with..you know, like Multiport, Tuned Port, etc etc etc.

And hey, if it wasn't too late, I'd show you the little plastic POS I was talking about. Lol.. Looks like a UFO..think it has a tube coming into the bottom, and like 2 tubes out the saucer part...I think.. One of the things running to it is like a wire I guess, cause it's thin as hell....but doesn't look shielded enough to be electrical. And it feels solid, not braided or anything at all. Anyways, the thing was RIGHT in the way..tubes all over. If it wasn't there, I'd be able to get the damned pump out..but with all those tubes, I was afraid to put a ratchet down there between everything..didn't want to break/sever something.
