Which Posi unit??

Hey I planned on gettin a SLP torsen posi unit for my car. Then last night I heard a few horror stories about them. Whuts all your takes about it? Are they good for the bucks, do they suck? Whut would you guys put in your cars? I dont really want to spend 300 + for a unit though. Thanks

They are the same units that they put in the brand new z28s and T/As. There is a stronger unit put in if slp does the car as an SS or WS6 though I believe. That should mean that they are good up to at least 310 probably more. I dont have experience with one, but I know that several people on this board do so someone else who has used it might chime in. Oh, and one thing I have heard is that slps shipping sucks and that the stuff is not packaged very well.

BlackBird305 just toasted his and it is only 11 months old. And he told me one of his buddies who had it toasted his in under a year to. We are starting to think he had to much Hook off the line. So who knows.

I ordered a Torsen take-out from SLP. When it arrived (on time) it came in a box that was in really tough shape. maybe it was SLP, maybe it was UPS.
Last Friday I pulled the stock carrrier out and lined-em up. The stock carrier won. The ring gear mounting flange is much thicker. Now on the 7.5 10-bolt we all know that the ring gear just isn't the strongest piece around. I at least want to bolt it to something with some meat.
Yesterday a friend of mine asks how the build-up is going and we discuss the torsen. He informs me that they did a shoot out awhile back in a mustang magazine and the torsen does not fair well in dragstrip (slicks) applications. It seems without clutches there isn't any way to absorb shock within the differential. It all makes perfect sense now that I'm looking at one.
The moral of the story is always send it back in the same crappy box it came in.

Will the unit survive on a mostly street driven car with under 300hp that will never use slicks?

I/ll be adding more power(250hp if I'm lucky) and a stick(T5) here pretty soon as well as 3.42's and a posi. So I don't want something that will die in less than a year.

I think the SLP posi will work great for a street car. The factory carrier make look stronger. But it didn't roll of the assembly line behind 305 hp LS1. Plus, the weakest part of the stock carrier is the cross pin, which the Torsen doesn't have. I remember a Car Craft giveaway LS1 T/A, it had nitrous, slicks and other goodies. What went first? The clutch. I don't think they even touched the rear end. JMO

I've been thrashing mine for a couple of months now with no problem, for $100 who cares buy two and forget about it. Seriously, you will probably never touch it again if you car is strictly street use. I will be putting slicks on mine next week and kissing my 7.5 goodbye.

I'm probably getting the SLP unit myself, but I have a question in relation to the gears I want to put in.

I would like to put in Richmond Gears 3.23's (49-0044-1 @ $190) for a 3 series carrier. The thing is, when you look at the technicals it says 27-spline??? I know mine has a 28-spline....does this mean anything?

Also, it states "fits 3.23 and numerically higher carrier," soooo that's o.k. for the Zexel-Torsen right, because it's a higher carrier??

I'm more confused now than when I first started typing.

If you are talking about gears and splines, they don't care about axle splines--it doesn't matter. You probably saw the splines on the pinion.

i know you said that you don't want to spend 300+ for a new one. i just got the auburn high performance series posi (cone style) for $304 from jegs. i did the install myself. it was a direct bolt up. i had no problems with the it. i have been driving ever since and i haven't had a problem.

I can also confirm that the zexel torsion posi is a great unit. I am sure that it has some disadvantages, but you can't beat the bang for the buck!
