M21 vs. M22 vs. T10?
Can someone give me the low down on the advantages/disadvantages of each? I'm trying to decide which 4 speed I should start looking for for my car. Damn glass T5's overwieght T56's and overpriced Tremecs
Thanks in advance

The ratios for the Muncies are:
MUNCIE M21 -
2.20 - 1.64 - 1.28 - 1.00
MUNCIE M22 -
2.20 - 1.64 - 1.28 - 1.00
Obviously the M22 is called the rockcrusher for a reason and is the prime pick because of its brass gears and such, but can you actually get a hold of one??
The Borg Warner had tons of different gear combos, but I dont think it was as tough as the Muncies, but I think it is lighter.

Ok, the M22 does not have brass gears! How long do you think a brass gear would last? The M22 differs from the M21 in that its gears are cut at less of an angle. This makes the transmission noisier and also stronger than the regular M21, thus the nickname "Rockcrusher". For the premium you would pay for the M22 over the M21, it is definitely not worth it. A T10 is about the same strengthwise as an M21 with a similar set of gears. The lower the first gear is, the weaker the transmission will be. My recommendation would be to try and find a Super T10. These things have a lot bigger internals compared to a Muncie or regular T10!!!

Well I might have access to an M22. Kinda a big if, prolly won't work out, but it was enough to get me thinking about it and thinking I should start doing some research.
Thanks so far...keep the opinions and data coming.

Yeah the M22 had the "straight cut" gears which makes it tougher and noisier. I was always told that the gear material was different; i was told it was something like brass. I guess thats wrong

M22 has brass syncros.
I would go with an M20. I personally like wide ratio transmissions a bit more than close ratio, It's not fun shifting gears every 3 seconds. The M21 and M22 both have the same ratios M22 is just a bit stronger not really stronger just less prone to gear damage.

The Super T-10 is the strongest of the bunch and offers better gear ratio spreads.
"W" series 2.64-1.77-1.35-1.00
"S" series 2.43-1.61-1.23-1.00
These are the gear ratios as I remember them, I could be off a little We were using these Super T-10's in ten second vehicles back in the mid 1970's and they worked well for our applications. The close ratio M-21's & M-22's are very hard on clutches because of the tall first gear ratio. The gear ratio spread on the M-20 wide ratio is 2.52-1.88-1.46-1.00.

2nd gen Z28 or Trans Am 74 or so on up; my 79 Z28 had one for instance (the 2.64 one)
The more common wide ratio ones have 2 grooves cut around the clutch splines, for ID; the really close ratio ones have no grooves.
