how much would it cost me to switch from a open dif. rear to a posi rear?

ok guys the title explains itslef, i am interested in buying a 10-12 bolt posi rear for my 84 305 camaro, I am willing to spend 500-600 on a posi rear, i would be even more please if its cheaper than this, with the money im spending, is it cheaper to just buy a new one, or to go with a junked one and rebuild? i want 3.43 or 3.73 gears.

also, what kind of gains will i be looking witht heis swap, is it really that good, or should i worry about it later when i get more mods? the open dif. rear i have now is in perfect condition, and 3.08 gear, would i see a difference?

Cost depends on how you do it. I installed 3.73 richmond gears(for 2 series carrier), put in a powertrax locker, and installed all new bearings(including axle bearings). I also had the 3.08 non-posi set-up. The cost was a little more than 600 bucks for the parts and installed it myself. I went that route because I plan on keeping the car a long time and don't want to have to touch the diff. for a long time. You could use used gears and reuse the bearings to save some money--but I wouldn't trust a used posi. Posi wears over time--a used one could be already worn out, or almost worn out. I did mine about 4-5 years ago, and it's never been apart since. After the new stuff, my car drove alot better. Feels like you gain a bunch of HP
If you want to buy a whole diff(housing and all), it needs to be a 10 or 9 bolt from a thirdgen(4th gen will stick out some). 12 bolts and other 10 bolts won't fit since we have a torque arm. A new one is out of your 500-600 price range by quite a bit.

did you notice any gains from the swap? i have an auto and further investigation tells me to stick with 3.43 gears, and a 10 bolt, i have no need for a 12.

so how much would it cost me for a 10 bolt posi with 3.43 gear ratio?

That was a quick reply, I added to my first post.
Gear selection won't affect price very much at all. 3.73's won't get you any worse mileage that 3.42's, and will make a bigger difference in acceleration. In fact, in 84 I think you could get 3.73's from the factory.
Cost of posi and 3.42/3.73 gears will depend on the type of limited slip, and if you want used or new stuff. Powertrax and auburn are around 300-310, new gears 185-195, bearings 100. Then labor to install if you can't do it yourself.

is it hard to do it youself? What would you have to do, I don't know the first thing about rears. So 3.43 and 3.73 are the same thing eh, well i guess i'll just go with 3.73's.

What do you mean by limited slip exactly?

I dont have many mods to my car yet, look at my sig. and you'll see, should i just goo with mods until later, or get it over with early?

3.42's and 3.73's are usually about the same price. Posi is GM's name for limited slip. Limited slips means exactly that, it limits the amount of one tire has compared to the other. With posi(limited slip), the power isn't routed equal, but as the tire with the least traction spins power is routed to the tire with the most traction. A locker locks the two tires together until you turn. It unlocks while turning(it allows one tire to spin faster than the ring gear). I would do the gears first--every time you do a performance mod with crappy gears you'll wish you had good gears. Subframe connectors is another good first mod.
