shift kit damage
#2
WHOA? Who told you it would do damage? Are you planning on not following the instructions or something?
The TransGo Shift Kit is designed to fix the basic weaknesses of a given tranny, whatever their R&D finds. The Reprogramming Kit is a Shift Kit with special high performance enhancements and gives the tranny more ability to handle higher horsepower and torque. They do this W/O compromising their intention of increasing the life of the tranny. This cannot be said about other manufacturers who set out to satisfy the 'High School Bang Shift' crowd.
Now you should know that there are certain parts that could go at any time, such as the Input Sprag or a Sun Shell that is already fractured from hard shifts. Also there are instances where, let's say a bushing such as the rear Stator bushing is worn (common) and it has allowed the Input Shaft to rub on the inside of the Stator tube, damaging the Sealing Ring surface and Ring Lands, well this leads to internal leaks and no 'kit' fixes that but instead requires a proper overhaul with attention to detail, not low cost (speed). If you have those problems it is a matter of time before failure occurs regardless of whether or not you instal the kit.
My basic test is: A) Does it HOLD in EACH gear, regardless of shift quality? B) Is the oil relatively clean? IF it passes these tests then an inspection of the pan is the next step. You will always see something in the pan, especially if you have the magnet in there but as long as no large pieces of metal fragments (like 1/8") OR friction material is found then I would go ahead with the install. I have personally seen a Tranny that shifted poorly but held at 70K, go to over 140K with just the installation of a TransGo Shift Kit (by me). I never found out how far it went since we sold the car.

i didnt mean that it would break my transmission i was wondering if it would speed up the prosses of not making it not last as long, and i was planing on having a transmission shop do it for me since an automatic is pretty complicated and i dont really want to get into that iam only 16 and dont know that much about transmissions
thanks

OK, well as I posted, if it passes the various tests and is installed and adjusted properly it will be fine. Now one other thing I should of pointed out is that if you begin to push it allot harder than you used to, now that it shifts much nicer that might bring out those previously mentioned weak points quicker.
Another problem area is that High RPM operation can induce early 3-4 failure due to centrifical apply of the 3-4's at high RPM in from oil 1st or 2nd. Your '91 should be a little better off since the factory had extra release springs installed but don't push it any higher than the factory redline. TransGo includes special release springs in the Reprogramming Kit bur they require that the tranny be out of the car. Another problem with high RPM use is that the pump will start to lower pressure and again, TransGo makes a kit that takes care of that but it has to be installed during an O/H.
I probably sound like I am painting a pretty dark picture but since you are asking, and I am a firm believer in the Law which says anything that can go wrong will go wrong I better spell it out just in case! Good luck!
