rear end housing alignment after 4th gen swap

i just put a 3.42 4th gen rear in my car, and after sitting there trying to verify for about half an hour, i came to the conclusion that my drivers side tire sticks out about a 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch further than the passenger side. would an ajustable panhard rod fix this? also, would you get a spherical rod/poly bushed combo? ive heard rod ends wear out in a year or two.

4th gen rear

Hey did you face any problems getting that rear in your thirdgen? I had the same rear from a 96' offered to me and I was just wondering if it would bolt on an 84Z. I have no idea why it sticks out to pne side like that. My guess would be a spacer, but that wouldve been noticable. Do you know if these 4th gen rears are strong? Can they handle any torque at all?

it bolted up just fine, only thing i had to do was bend one hard brake line and put the rear in. im not understanding what you mean by sticking out because of a spacer, theres nowhere for a spacer to be. ive seen these rear ends hold up to back-to-back-to-back mid 11 runs, then be driven home away from the dragstrip so yeah they can handle power

had the car been wrecked? or the car you got the rear end out of? Thats the only thing i can think of. All the articles i have read on the swap the tires are supposed to stick out some on both sides because the 4th gens are wider. Also, are the 4th gen rearends stronger than 3rds? I figure the first thing to go on my car is the rearend. I am going to weld the axle tubes, and use a girdle and shock proof gear oil. Oh and no slicks thanks for the info, and good luck on fixing your problem.

nope the car the rearend came out of was right there when i picked it up, it had just been swapped out for a 9 inch in a 97 SS 6 speed. the tires do stick out on both sides past the fenders. its supposed to be 1.5 inches on each side, and i think its sitting at like 1.65 on the driver side, and 1.35 on the passenger. i think the adjustable panhard will fix it. it hasnt bothered handling or performance in anyway.

if the axle housing is offset towards the drivers side it is because the panhard rod is pushing it that way, if the thing was hanging out too much on the pass. side then you might have a problem-one of the main reason it offsets to the d.side is that when the car is lowered or the springs have worn in some and are starting to sag. when the cars body goes lower around the axle, the pivoting ends of the rod swing in an arc that happens to begin at a level below horizontal. as the bar gets closer to horizontal, the further out the lt.side tire sticks out. need an adjustable rod-buy one or fab it up yourself. it only has to be a c-hair shorter than the stock one. later
