T56 conversion question

I have a few questions..... The first being, does anyone know where I can get the correct numbers and sizes for all the bolts I need. The tranny I have came with most of them but not all, and I'm not sure which ones. Second, will a PROM from an auto still work for the manual?

Any dealer will be able to tell you what bolts you need and get them for you. As long as you get grade 8 bolts for the bellhousing bolts you're fine. For the flywheel bolts I would be more careful to make sure you get them from the dealer because they take a little more stress.

The auto chip will work, but you may get a code because of the absence of the torque convertor. Your idle may act funny too because the idle characteristics on an auto are different from a stick, but it shouldn't be real problem. You will definitely be able to get it up and running fine though. I had mine running with the auto chip for quite some time before I got around to messing with the chip.

Thank you for the response. I didn't even think about the dealer. Now I will be that much closer to getting this tranny in!

i just ordered these bolts from a gm parts wholesaler. get ready, the transmission to bellhousing bolts are 3.xx each. and that was wholesale price. from a dealer expect ~4.50 per bolt. you will need 8 of them. the bellhousing to block bolts are only a buck and some change each. for the flywheel bolts, go to summit and order an ARP flywheel to crankshaft bolt kit($7.xx per set), and a presssure plate to flywheel to bolt kit ($7.xx per set). ARP bolts are much stronger than factory bolts.

Thank you for the info. It is much appreciated....though those prices are really expensive. Anyone have an idea of where I may be able to get them cheaper? Maybe NAPA or something.

unfortunately i believe you are gonna have to bite the bullet on the transmission to bellhousing bolts (3-4 bucks apiece) and go to the dealership or go to gmpartsdirect.com with the part number. if you will give me an hour or so to locate the receipt ill come back and post the part numbers for the bolts.

Why don't you just get the thread size from the dealer and go buy some grade 12.9 metric bolts at any good hardware store. These will do fine for the bellhousing to block and tranny to bellhousing bolts. And the pressure plate bolts you have to get from the dealer. The ARP bolt set is for standard small block chevy pressure plates. The T56 pressure plate has special bolts that are longer and only threaded about 1/2" at the end. They are cheap from the dealer. Something like $7-8 for the set of 6 is what I got mine for. Honestly you don't need to get the GM factory bolts for everything. Especially something like the tranny to bellhousing bolts. It's not like GM has some "special" grade bolts that you can't get anywhere else.

They don't have to measure the thread pitch it will say what it is in the computer for most of the bolts. I was even able to get the thread size for the throttle cable bracket bolts for an LT1/4 intake manifold.

I wasn't aware that ARP had the bolts for the T56 pressure plate. Do you happen to know the part number off hand?

its not in the catalog but if you call summit they have the arp bolt kit. ill post the number when i get the shipment.

i guess your local chevy dealers are alot more friendly than mine they wont even attempt to look up a part number for you to buy something. you have to have the number brought in with you before you can order. and if they did have the bolts here, the morons prolly wouldnt let you see them just so you had to buy them from em'

Wow that sucks man. The Chevy dealer right near my house just opened a brand new parts/service center so they have all the latest computers and software. They can pull up exploded views of anything and everything GM. I've been to about 3 other dealers in Atlanta besides this one and 2 of them were worthless like you say. One of them I was pleased with. The two dealerships are Tom Jumper Chevrolet and Jim Ellis Chevrolet if anyone cares. The service reps are extremely helpful and patient at both of these dealerships.
