no reverse and no overdrive help!

My buddies tranny has no reverse and no overdrive it shifts through the other gears kind of funny sometiimes it will hold the gear way out or sometimes shift early and fall on its face.could it be the valvebody or a bad shift kit installation he has yet to tell me if he tried to install the shift kit he bought a while back.thanks for the help!!!
