Should it do this? (TH700-R4)

I got -88 GTA/TA. Transmission shifts real hard from first
to second gear. secon gear hits on so hard that it always
spins my wheels around (loose grip). so, should it do this?
it does that in "normal" driving.

Unless the previous owner installed a firm shift kit, then I would say no. Sounds like your TV cable needs adjustment, look for similar posts and follow transfixleo's method. And I would check it out soon, because an improper setting will shorten the life of your tranny.

No it shouldn't. Unless it has been 'modified' of course (as already pointed out above). Try adjusting the TV cable. If that doesn't help, you will have to drop the pan. It could be a sticking TV valve, or the spring is broken in the 1-2 accumulator (accumulator piston itself?)

There are probably other possible reasons, but those are beyond my knowledge (e.g. accumulator valve in the valve body, etc?).

BTW, It's cold in Finland now. Are you sure that you have Dextron III oil in the tranny?

If your adjustment doesent fix anything disconnect the TV cable and drive normal. This will tell you if tV is jacked or if the hard shifting continues you can rule out the cable its self and look for another problem. Disconnecting the TV cable just wont let you car down shift at WOT.

Remember though: Only make a short test drive with the TV cable disconnected. It will destroy your band and clutches, if you drive the car continuously with the cable disconnected, or even wrongly adjusted.
