1988 Camaro Trans Question!!!

Recently bought a 1988 RS Camaro , it has a 400 SBC in it and not sure bout the tranny but they were both out of a 1988 or 1989 chevy truck.

Problem.---- Driving in first gear and second gear shifts fine, (automatic btw), after hitting second gear, the car will rev super high and loud and will not accelerate any more. Have to pull over shut car off and let cool down restart and keep driving, but will always do the same thing. Do I need a new transmission? please Help!

Re: 1988 Camaro Trans Question!!!

Really need to know what you have 1st. The 400 sbc could not have been the stock engine in the '88 or 89 truck as they stopped making the 400 in '81. So it was swapped into that truck

The stock setup for that truck would be a 305 or 350 with a 700r4 overdrive trans.

If you have a 700r4, it could be your TV cable.
If it's a th-350 or 400 it could be the vac modulator valve or hose going to it.

But really it sounds like the trans is slipping in high gear and on it's way out.

Re: 1988 Camaro Trans Question!!!

It may of came out of something like a '78 3/4 ton truck. I will check the TV cable, Where to look at for the TV cable and what does it look like, would that really make me not able to shift past second gear? My speedometer and Rpm gauge doesn't work either.

Re: 1988 Camaro Trans Question!!!

Identify the transmission before buying anything. Match the pan against something like this.

Doesn't too much matter what kind it is though, from your description, it's messed up with a capital F. Needs a teardown and rebuild.

Re: 1988 Camaro Trans Question!!!

Throttle Valve cable adjustment is on the driver's side of the carb, rear corner.
Speedo and tach are separate issues, testing the speedo cable with a helper and a drill is easy, if the cable is good it could be the speedo gears in the trans. I've had a new one fail, so it is possible.

Re: 1988 Camaro Trans Question!!!

First, identify the transmission. If it is a TH350 or TH400 and the vacuum modulator is disconnected, you will have first only until you hit 5,000 rpm or more, then it will shift to second, but will go back to first very quickly when starting to slow down. The 700R4 will have first and second even when the 3-4 clutch pack is shot. The TH200 can have first and second, but if no third gear the reverse will be very weak on not at all.
