What drive gear do I need for VSS?
Ok, had a new 700r4 tranny put in last week and the speedo doesn't work. My friend said he didnt notice if there was a drive gear on the old tranny before taking it back for the core charge. Now, when the vss sensor was removed yesterday, there was a gear on it but none was seen in the tail housing although he said he saw a magnet in there. So, I'm assuming I need to get a drive gear to go on the shaft in the tail housing. Its a 1989 Firebird and I know it differs from the Camaro since the Camaro used a different vss. Also, I have a 3.27 rear end on it, so I need to get the correct drive gear to go on the shaft. I just need to know the right color since they are all different teeth. Any thoughts? Thanks!!!!!

I think they were red and blue on my 89 w 3.27 gears but I don't remember the tooth count. If I get out to the garage I have them in a box on the shelf

I forgot to mention. The driven gear that came off the vss was white if im not mistaken. And do you remember what the rotation on the speedo was listed at? 1000 or 1001? I put the stock 350 tpi back in it.

It's 1001 as referenced by documents by GM older than me.
It's 1000 according to all internet hipsters.
17/44 is a valid combination for 3.27 / stock tires. 17/45 was also used with shorter tires.
Color isn't a good way to buy a gear; too many different gears for different transmissions. Which is why you should have posted what you had.

Ok. That info helped a lot. This is what my VSS looked like. It had a conical gear on the end of it. The number of teeth was 45

Re: What drive gear do I need for VSS?
Finally got to the garage and dug out my old SLP drive driven gears box.
17 and 44 is correct. For the 3.27 gear w the stock tires.
The factory drive gear is red and the driven is a lightish green.
The 2.73 is the red/blue I was thinking about.

Re: What drive gear do I need for VSS?
So what if I used the 17 tooth drive gear with my 45 tooth driven gear? Will my speed be higher or lower on the speedo gauge?
