I scored some Astro van 700R4's...any differences??
I just scored (10) 700R4s out of some Astro cargo vans for $30 a piece!!! They all need to be rebuilt, but I feel it will be worth it!! If not, I'll recycle them. Anyway, my question is are there any differences between a Camaro one and these in the trans itself? I mean in hard parts? Obviously the servo and converter and tailshaft are different, but those can all be replaced with a 'vette servo and a looser converter and a Camaro tailshaft, right? And then I should have a kickass trans (after a rebuild, of course). Let me know your opinions!! And if anyone needs one, I also got a 60degree V6 one that I am not going to use. $30 takes it.

One big difference is you probably won't have the 'Vette rear planet with the oil slinger. Also the calibration of course won't be the same but yes they can be modded and installed. Are they later model units?

I'm using my stock '92 Astro tranny and if your going to use them with a V8 then you NEEEEEEEEED a shift kit. I just installed the Corvette servo last night and it makes it much more bearable. The converter stalls REAL LOW, if you have them I wouldn't use them.
Other than that, good score on those tranny's!

One other difference that I can think of is the shift linkage. If you use a columb shift tranny in a floor shift your gonna have to change the linkage on the tranny so the cable will work.
But good deal! I can get $50 for a used, blown 700r4 from any shop around town so you got a great deal. BTW did you know the rear gears for an astro is also the same as 3rd gens? You might want to see if you can also find some good ratios.

Do Astros use a torque arm? If not, then they probably don't have the mount on the tailshaft.
You willing to ship any of these?

Astros have the same gears that the Thirdgen do, however the axle housing itself will not work. On the Astro rear end the diff is offset 4" to the passenger side so the driveshaft clears the 27 gal gas tank.
The holes for the torque arm mount should be on the tailshaft. Mine has the holes but there is this big damper thing bolted there instead of a torque arm.
