Rear Diff Question

Hi

I dissemble the rear diff to clean an painted for protection, it was getting surface rust.

First Question: Will it hurt anything if I pack with grease the axle Berings?

Second Q: What is the torque specs for the bolts that hold the axle in place?

I have a 1989 GTA

Re: Rear Diff Question

Assuming since it's an 89 GTA that you have the 9-bolt? if so, see post #3 of this thread for torque specs.

I don't see why greasing the bearings would caust any problems, as long as you don't unseat something that needs to stay in a certain place.

Re: Rear Diff Question

Those bearings run in gear oil, not grease. Just put some gear oil on them and put it back together. No grease.

Re: Rear Diff Question

What is the difference between these two?

Bearing Cap Bolts-Ft Lbs. 45
Axle Retainer Bolts-Ft Lbs. 36

Are't they the same bolts?

Re: Rear Diff Question

Nope, not the same bolts. Bearing cap bolts are inside the housing holding the differential in.

Re: Rear Diff Question

Do not overfill. The oil will just find its way out anyway & make a mess.

Re: Rear Diff Question

It may leak. That rubber plug in the cover tends to leak anyway. I usually clean the cover and the plug well and then put a little RTV around the hole before I put the plug in.
