10 Bolt Upgrade. Does it matter which rear end I start with?

10 Bolt Upgrade. Does it matter which rear end I start with?
So I have a 9 bolt now...and it's a little tired. With replacement parts being what they are...I'd just assume start over and build up a 10 bolt. In looking for a rear housing, does it matter what it is? Posi/open, disc/drum, earlier years, later years, etc. etc.? Does it matter? I plan on replacing everything. ...and with the adapter brackets, I can still use my pbr calipers, right? So really it shouldn't matter I'm thinking.
...but of course, many of you know more than me.....so I ask the question!

The '90 to '92 rear ends had 28 spline axles. They also may have the 4 bolt housing ends. I would probably start with one of these. As far as internal parts, it doesn't matter because you are replacing everything. Gear ratio, differential and all of that stuff fits any housing.

My 92 drum rear had the four bolt holes in the axle flange. If I were you, I'd look for a good drum rear since you'll be removing whatever brakes the rear has and people practically give them away. They are plentiful in the yards too since no one wants to swap to a drum rear.

90-92 w disc brakes
That way you get the good brakes and axles.
Doesn't matter what gear or whether it's posi; you're going to throw all that in the trash most likely and replace it, anyway. Just worry about the stuff you're going to keep.

A rear from a 6-cylinder car is a good choice. They usually aren't as beat on as a V8 engined car is. And, 6's with the auto have 3.23 gears, with the T5 equipped ones having 3.42 gears.
They will usually have drums brakes to which you can swap your PBR's onto.
The one thing to watch for is the possibility that the rear isn't the original one. So best to check the gear ratio and axle spline count before plunking down the dough.

Good info guys, thanks. ....in all honestly, I don't even care if it was just a plain ole empty housing. Obviously a nice rear, gone through and ready to run would be great, but I'll buy whatever I need. I just don't NEED $2500 12 bolt, and I don't feel like chasing down hard to find and high dollar 9 bolt parts.
