700R4 transmission wont shift from park
Ok, so I just had my steering column replaced and now for some reason my transmission wont shift from park. Is there a link between the two? Because it shifted fine before I replaced the column. If not what could be the problem? And what can I do to fix it? This is very frustrating, I need my car back!
By the way, the car is a 1986 Camaro and the column is from a 84 Firebird (if that matters, they said it would work though)

When you insert the key and turn it there are a couple of metal rods that move down. One is to the starter switch (a white box with wiring attached to it), and the other is supposed to have a cable connected to it which unlocks the shifter on the other end. I'm going by memory but that should explain it well enough for you to find it.
There could be differences between years so I would make sure to keep the old one handy in case you need to swap over, or try combining what you need to make it work.

Ok, I finely got it out of park and into drive, but now it won't go from drive to park, just drive to neutral and reverse.

I agree with Night rider327.
If you don't want to take the column apart again, take the center console apart, and inspect the shifter base.
There are two cables going out from there:
- one goes to the transmission
- the other one goes to the steering column
The column one keeps the shifter in park when the key is not in the lock.
You shouldn't be able to pull the key if your shifter is in any other position than park.

take the cover off the shifter...
find the cable...
unhook it...
figure out which way the linkage needs to go for the shifter to work and use zip ties or duct tape or whatever you have handy to hold it there.. or just remove that linkage arm, which is what i think i did to mine 5 years ago. i forgot how it's set up, but it's not a part of my car any more..

Re: 700R4 transmission wont shift from park
I'm having a similar problem. Originally couldn't get they key out, car went in drive only and not reverse, now I messed with that cable that went to the column, was able to get the key out, but now can't get the car into anything but park. Any help please! Thank you.
