Long shaft (9") Th350 with stock driveshaft

I put my new TH350 in the other day. This is a 1LE driveshaft. Notice how far the yoke sticks out. Everyone says a stock driveshaft will work with a 9" th350 but this doesn't seem like enough yoke engagement to me...

Re: Long shaft (9") Th350 with stock driveshaft

That definitely isn't in far enough Joe, it doesn't look like it's half way into the bushing.

I'm doing the same install in my 5spd car and hope I don't end up short, I don't recall what my shaft came out of. After reading on here I bought a aluminum three rivers off sleezbay # 12564004, it measures 47 1/8" from center of rear joint to the end of the yoke.

Can you post the length of your's ?

Driveshaft measures 41.5" center to center of the ujoint. I didn't take it back out so I can't mesure the yoke, but that doesn't matter. Even if the yoke was 3 feet long you want the ujoint close to the tail. I think you want 7/8" freeplay.

My driveshaft is gm # 10084375 which is a spicer made unit.

What is your ctr-to-ctr measurement?

Re: Long shaft (9") Th350 with stock driveshaft

According to this chart, the TH350 with the 9" tailshaft should be 5/8" longer than the 700R4.. Which tells me that I should not be having a problem.

Hrmm.. Maybe my aftermarket LCA's are too long..

Re: Long shaft (9") Th350 with stock driveshaft

Mine measures 41" center, now I'm worried I'm gonna be short. I just measured center of bolt on my stock LCR and got 19" if you want to check that....

Re: Long shaft (9") Th350 with stock driveshaft

Measure how much actual spline engagement it has. It should have 100% bushing engagement. If it does, and plenty of spline eng, it's likely fine, but not optimal.

Joe,

Did you get your drive shaft issue sorted out yet ?

Nope. Been busy cleaning out my dad's house so we can put it on the market.

Hopefully tonight I'll have ten minutes to pull the shaft and measure my spline engagement.

My car is on the lift right now with the suspension hanging down. I suspect that when the car is on the ground, the control arms straighten out and as the rear end swings up it actually pulls the driveshaft out more, yes?

That's a very good possibility being up on a lift like that !

I'm trying to wrap my head around the geometry, but I believe as the control arm straightens it pulls the yoke out of the transmission, so whatever play I have now will be worse when the suspension is loaded.

Something has to be off, because I have the long-tailed TH350 in my car and utilized the stock '83 drive shaft. Fit perfectly.

Got any pictures?

I don't know what could be off. Motor can't go back any, as it is getting the 9 o'clock trans bolt in is a PITA in regards to firewall contact. I measured my LCA's and I've got 19" just like Rob. I doubt the car stretched two inches haha.

I'm using a 4th gen diff. I don't believe it places the yoke any deeper into the housing.

Re: Long shaft (9") Th350 with stock driveshaft

Found a picture from 2006 of my '91 with a alum driveshaft. I can't tell if it's a 1LE or LS1 driveshaft from the pictures, but it looks like it didn't quite go all the way in either.

edit: it's not a 1LE shaft, the ujoints give it away. 1LE shafts have 1310 ujoints with clips. So it's a 4th gen driveshaft. So it could also be from a T56 and that's why it was short. 2006 was a long time ago.

Just checked and I don't, sorry. I'm running everything in it's stock location, '83 Z28 drive shaft, and a 9-bolt rear out of an '87(I think?). I'd get you some pics but the car is in a different county at the moment.

This is with a T5.

Interesting..

Maybe the aluminums are just shorter???

Joe,

The rear end doen't move forward or back as the suspension moves up or down, it only moves up and down.

With the suspension loaded the rear end is closer in line with the trans, as you unload the suspension that line drops or moves the rear further down out of line.

Thus, you should see the drive shaft move into the trans further if you lowered the car down on jack stands under the axle housings while on your lift.....

Interesting.. I have a jegster torque arm that is a slip yoke.

So maybe this is perfectly fine and when my suspension is loaded it will slide in a bit..

Makes sense, come to think of it I've never looked at mine with the suspension unloaded, so I bet that's it.

The LCA allow for the rear (and the center of the rear u-joint) to travel in an arc. The front u-joint remains stationary, slip-yoke changes notwithstanding.

While the 82-02 chassis is a poor example because of minimal slip yoke travel, the yoke is furthest into the transmission with the suspension at full droop. Not with the suspension in compression. Joe has it right.

And yes, some 4th gen shafts are shorter.
