T5 - is this normal (pic)?
Hello,
I took the input shaft off of the T5 to see why it might be making noise. I discovered that the portion of the Output shaft (Main shaft) that goes into the Input shaft looked pitted and that there were some small shavings on the bottom underneath.
What also concerns me is that this pitted portion looks like a pressed on "cap". Did these originally come with a "cap" on the end of the shaft?

Somebody attempted a repair to that, and of course it's unsuccessful.
You need another mainshaft.
Yeah I've been through a coupla those in my (thankfully) over-with T-5 days.

Some options I found:
1)I found a local place that states that they could repair the Mainshaft for $85. This would be building it up and then grinding it back down to spec.
2) I also found a new WC Mainshaft for an S10 truck - it is 1/2 inch shorter than the Camaro mainshaft.
Big question: Can I use this?
Does this just mean that the yoke at the rear will stick out 1/2 inch less than before?
What is your opinion of these options?

The over the counter "T5-Z" and the 93 Cobra T5 were made with a tapered roller bearing instead of the loose rollers you have. The bearing is very similar to the one used in T56 & TR6060 but a different PN. I haven't done the swap but there's a T5 in my garage so it's a backburner project.
That's great you found a local that will do the repair. If you did the T5-Z bearing thing: find out if the ford 28 spline slip-yoke o.d. matches the GM 27 spline. If it does, you could go Ford mainshaft and avoid the machining. Then you'd need to figure out the input machining on a GM input to match the above two mentioned input shafts.
1/2" isn't a big deal; you want the yoke to be on the splines enough and in the bushing enough.
But S10 mainshafts are sometimes different on the reluctor / speedo gear provisions. There are workarounds, but price a new mainshaft before you buy the wrong part to save very little, relatively speaking.

Better inspect the inside of the input gear too. That is the other wear area for that same bearing. You may end up needing the input shaft and the main shaft. I've had a bunch of T5's that were worn in the very same place. I've also seen several that had been welded and reground.

Is there a resource out there that has info on what Mainshafts (from other cars) can be substituted for the Camaro V8 Mainshaft?

Yeah I had a local machine shop make me one of those back in maybe 85 or 86, one of the first few T-5s I tore up; didn't fly.
Ended up buying a new mainshaft from GM. Only place to get one at the time. Yeah it hurt.
I doubt the Frod one will work because the drive shaft splines are .... Frod. Any GM one should work though.
