Something like a B&M Quicksilver does the same thing.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/bmm-80688
Full auto in D but manual shifting up or down one gear at a time in the lower gears .
Put shifter in 1st gear, accelerate , hit shifter ,it changes to 2nd, hit shifter it changes to 3rd
works same backwards

One that is made for 3rd gens is really hard to find.. The hurst dual gate was cool and worked good as well from what I've seen.. Too bad they don't make them anymore! It's hard to find a nice shifter ball replacement as well that isn't 400$ for my 86 (round style).

Same difference, is a ratchet shifter. Each time you hit it it will only shift one gear, up or down.
No chance of a missed shift or accidentally shifting into N on a power shift like with the stock shifter
Do a
plenty have installed aftermarket shifters in a 3rd gen
