Which shift kit?

Hi Guys,

I'm updating my 700r4 (1984 vintage, 27 spline... I know) to go behind my new 383. The motor is going to be a good street motor (383, Performer RPM heads and intake, Lunati 60103 cam with holley 750) So, I'm going to put a B&M holeshot TC with 2000 rpm stall. Also, I'm going to put in the Vette servo (Suggestions for where to get this?) and a shift kit. I've heard great things about the trans-go shift kit. I was looking on Summit and they have the one specifically for the 700r4 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/trg-700-2-3/overview/ and then one for the 4l60e http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tr...-hd2/overview/. Has anyone used either of these kits? Which should I go for? Thanks guys!

Re: Which shift kit?

The 2nd one you listed is for the 4L60E meaning electronically controlled. It's not the same one you have unless yours was swapped.

I have the TransGo kit in my Pro-Built Transmission and it has survived 7000 RPM shifts on the street.

Dana normally includes other things with the shift kits to improve them. Here's the link:

Yes I just did the 700-2-3 in my car. It already had a vette servo. You will also need to buy a bigger boost valve. I used the .500". You may find you need other pieces once you're in there. I got my vette servo from TPU in Conley , GA for about $15. They may be able to ship to you. I don't know because I live in the area. Just make sure you stay away from the B&M kit for the 700r4.

Re: Which shift kit?

1. get a 89ish and newer core for your trans build.
2. you'll want a waay better converter.
3. Skip the vet servo and get the bigger billet servo parts, they have waay better clamping/holding power
4. go to http://www.700r4l60e.com/ look around then give them a call

Re: Which shift kit?

Thanks very much for the input so far guys. This guy Dana at Pro Built comes highly recommended. I know all about the advantages to getting a newer transmission from the later Birds, Camaros, Vettes (if you can) and trucks, but I was hoping to run with what I have, just improve on it. What's wrong with the holeshot converter? I've seen nothing but good reviews for it. That clears up which shift kit to go with, that's great thanks.

The smaller B&M converters are just rebuilt V6 stuff. Spend the bux and get a good one, you'll be glad you did.

Re: Which shift kit?

All converters aren't created equal.

Your normal off the shelf converters are just that. Everyone gets the same part number in a box. The guy pushing 500+ torque with a BBC or the guy pushing 300+ torque with a SBC get the same converter rated at what ever flash speed the company advertises it at. Torque being applied to the converter will change the flash speed (stall speed).

Your higher dollar converters the company will take your specs and build it to your range you select for your application. Mine was 2400 RPM spec'd for the stock TPI motor. Even with motor issues I can tell the new 383 flashed it slightly higher.

I wouldn't bother with anything under 2200 or so. Frankly our stock one is normally around 1600 and you probably won't notice any difference.

So that covers stall speed. Next you have lockup or non-lockup which is dependent on your transmission. Obviously lockup should help improve gas mileage for street use along with reduction in heat when stall speeds get moved up higher.

Converters can be different sizes too. Small sizes less stress and more torque multiplier they can provide. Most cheaper ones are 12", while the more expensive ones are usually 9" or smaller.

Then you have additional converter features such as anti-ballooning plates or additional multi-disk clutch packs made for full throttle lockup (if lockup is supported).

Also sometimes the more expensive converters companies offer "reflash" service within a time period (dependent on the company). Say you get the converter try it out don't like it or you change your setup and now it's no longer working how you want. You can mail the converter back in and they will modify it or replace it with a different flash speed.

^^^ Listen to this man!

Seriously, just get a modified TranGo from ProBuilt Automatics. They're daily driver friendly and wild when you want. Easy to live with and very fun. Better than a stock TransGo kit. Once you see the instructions that go into his kit, you'll see how custom it is. And the fact that it's two different shift kits combined too.

The heavy duty kits are for things like ambulances, towing, S10 pickups etc. The street/strip kits are for Camaros, Corvettes etc.

Your torque converter is WAY too small. A 383 with heads and cam pretty much demands a bigger stall.

http://www.circledspecialties.com/p-...converter.aspx I'd say a 2C minimum to 4C would do you well. But phone up Chris and tell him your specs. Or fill out his "ask Chris" section on the website. He'll build you a custom spec torque converter.

Re: Which shift kit?

WOW thanks to everyone for such a great response, I'm learning a great deal about trannys and TCs. I spoke with Dana at probuilt yesterday, and he suggested a 2800 stall converter, made by Edge or Vigilante. Also, upon inspection, it looks like my trans has been rebuilt recently (probably to stock spec, but that's better than a trans with 120,000 miles on it). I think I'll probably go with the 700r4 upgrade kit from probuilt and a 2800 stall converter.
