should i use a 700 or 400?

Well I'm stumped on this one guys.
I recently did a 355 build.
My.machinist has made many builds like
This and says it'll.be making almost 400 hp.
Now im not sure wether to put my 700r4 back in
With a3500 stall or the th400 with a 4000 stall
And anti.balloon plate.

The 700r4 only.had 90000 miles and never slipped
And worked pretty good.

The th400 I.just got and it seems to be rebuilt as its got
New oil and front seal.
Still.have to make sure it works before any further plans though.

I kno the 700r4 is great for gas but the400 can handle the abuse for.sure.

I plan on using.the.car for.both street and strip. With a 100
Shot.

What I want to know is.if I'm.making atleast 300 to atleast
375 hp.at the wheel. Should I go with the th400 or stick.with
My 700.

I kno the 700 is great for.gas but I'm not concerened about
It since the motor will.hog has no matter what.

Would I be better.of spending the cash to put the 400 in my third gen,
Or just buying a converter for my 700 and going that route.

Re: should i use a 700 or 400?

How much highway driving do you plan on doing?

I think the 700 with the 3500 lockup stall sounds a heck of a lot more fun than a 400 with an unlocked 4000 stall. The unlocked stall on the 400 means you're actually going to be revving even higher than you normally would. And without an overdrive too.

There are ways to beef up a 700 transmission.

No highway driving at all. It'll.just be a car to cruise
And race at the strip

Stall is related to the engine torque not the trans.
You don't mention camshaft or axle ratio which are factors in determining the required stall speed

Run too high a stall while cruzin and all you will be doing is generating heat from the convertor slippage

A 3000 stall should be enough. Do you already know where to get the 400, they're getting hard to find.

400....

Might as well, you'll probably want more than a 100 shot, especially if the engine combo is a dud unexpectedly.. fingers crossed,it isn't.

700 is strong and can be built well but it gets pricey.

Goodluck!

Re: should i use a 700 or 400?

My 700R4 is out of a 89.. I shredded the original many years ago because I was cheap. A well built 700 will be good. It is a matter of preference..

I like 400's. Easy to work on. The only weak link is the bellhousing, but it takes quite a bit of HP to crack them.

Re: should i use a 700 or 400?

If you are going to stay at 400crank hp , then the 700r4 will be fine.

If you are going to put some nitrous to it later on, then get the th400.

My 700r4 wouldv'e lasted me but I started putting 150+hp shot of nitrous to my 383 and the trans wouldnt last. The plus is the th400 is probably cheaper to rebuild than the 700r4 to hold the same power.

The thing is I still.have to.see if the th400 is in good working condition.
It's got a new front seal and its pretty clean.
But.you never kno!

Re: should i use a 700 or 400?

If the trans is out of the car now, do yourself a favour and get it freshened up.

Its a pain the butt to put it in the car and then find out later that you have to remove it.

And if the th400 is completely stock, I would put better parts into it as well

Re: should i use a 700 or 400?

Well after.long thought I decided to put in th 400.
I wasn't sure if it would work so I said screw it. I put it in
And put it in drive the yoke moves and the tranny don't leak.
4 speed would've been great but. It was a 27 spline and the
Th400 is supposdly rebuilt.

All I.have to do know.is.get the trans mount with torque arm adapter
And a driveshaft.

I'm still debating though if I should get a longer drive shaft.
Or just take mine and get it worked on to hook.up to the
10 bolt rear and to.the th400 yoke
