loud clunk on take off

hi everyone i have a 91 firebird 3.1 v6 and when i really gun it from a dead stop there is a loud clunk but then it is fine anytime after, except when i am in second and i floor it and it kicks down to first. I figured it was the u joints so i canged the front and back u joints. It has the stock trandmission and stock rear end. When it happens it feels like it is under the console. Any ideas would help, thanks

Re: loud clunk on take off

Get the front of the car on ramps or stands and check the transmission and torque arm mount.

Re: loud clunk on take off

Before you purchase anything, crawl under the car and take a peek. You may well have that awful and very expensive fluid-filled mount. If so, I'd recommend, swapping in a used cross member and a standard mount.

Re: loud clunk on take off

could also be a missing rubber bushing in the rear or front suspension.

Re: loud clunk on take off

I had the same situation but , I just put the car back together with 383 and b&m built trans and brand new mount from Orielly Auto Parts and tore that mount in half within 5 brisk drives!...so I replaced it with the black poly performance one ..bad thing is I also stripped a bolt hole to the trans installing that thing so I havent got to try this out yet also just ordered matching torque arm bushing I see that it is done with ..?wonder if that caused the new mount to tear in half! oh well

Re: loud clunk on take off

I may have the same problem, Im going to get some t-mounts this weekend. I had this banging noise coming from the passenger floor board, sounded like exhaust hitting floor. when turning left and accelerating. I installed wheel bearings, well i bought some, they didnt mach up so i took them back.they were ok. . "i got on it" going straight an it sounded like the trans hit the pavement.
