transmission whine

I have recently traded for a 86 camaro z28, 305 5-speed. Not sure what transmission it has from the factory.

It has a bad whine in low rpm acceleration, mainly in 3rd,4th,and 5th. If i shift to a lower gear and ride at higher rpm's it goes away. The previous owner put in a new centerforce clutch. Not sure if flywheel was resurfaced or new pressure plate or throw out bearing was installed.

Let me know what you think

Re: transmission whine

You've probably got a non-world class t5 tranny. Unfortunatly, it sounds like you've got a bearing going out of the transmission and it may be getting ready to let loose.

Re: transmission whine

If it was the throw-out bearing would it whine when the clutch is engaged???

only makes the noise when clutch is out and accelerating at low RPM's.

Re: transmission whine

I would think that the throw out bearing would make noise when the clutch is pushed in (disengaged). That's when it has pressure on it. Unfortunatly the only definite answer will be when you take the tranny out and visually inspect everything. Good luck.

Re: transmission whine

It only whines when accelerating in low rpm's after you let out the clutch. Which tells me the throw out bearing is fine. I just want to know what else it could be and/or how much whine is "normal".

Re: transmission whine

As stated above it is probably a bearing inside the transmission that is going bad. The tranny you have is a factory T5 5 speed and it is known to be weak.
No real whine is normal in all the standard trans cars I have been in before. Never been in a T5 Camaro or Firebird though.
