Car slams into gear
I have a 87 camaro with a lg4 on it, auto tranny 150k. In the morning when I put it into reverse or drive it slams into gear, so hard in fact in does a mini burnout (tire marks all over the drive way). I read the other post on this discussion, just had a few questions.
From what I have read... Things to checkout, tranny mount, rearend gear play, u joints, and tranny fluid.
I've experience a broken tranny mount before and I don't feel this is my problem. still replacing it though.
No clue how to check the rear end, I will have to take it to a shop for that.
My tranny fluid is brand new, though it seems to be way past full. Could this be causing my problem? It is more gentle after the car warms up. Not sure if its from tranny fluid thinning out or the idle dropping.
What are your opinions? Any thing else I should check before I take it to a shop?

Re: Car slams into gear
Mine does the same thing... What RPM is the car at when putting it into gear? Mine will do it if its at like 1500 or so but not so much when its below 1k

Re: Car slams into gear
Early 700R4s have no accumulators to soften the initial engagement into forward or reverse. That was added in the auxiliary valvebody in sometime 1987.

Mine did the same thing when i had an auto. You can see its really bad in my one wheel peel video:

Re: Car slams into gear
My '86 T/A with a 700R4 does that a little in reverse, and really bad into drive. I've heard it was my idle speed so I used the tech article on the page to turn it down to the right idle RPM, but it still does it. It's bad- makes the engine jump forward and smack the airbox, and it gets worse as the engine/trans get warmer.

Re: Car slams into gear
And mine has discs, so I can cut that out of the possible causes. I'll be changing the trans fluid tomorrow and taking a look inside the pan for anything bad, as well as inspecting a few other things. I suspect my flex plate is close to gone, but I don't know if that has anything to do with a jumpy transmission.

Re: Car slams into gear
The flexplate shouldn't have anything to do with it... It might be time for a rebuild with 150k on it...

Re: Car slams into gear
I've got about 120k on mine, but if and when my trans goes, I'll probably be replacing it with an '87+ 700R4, so I get the benefit of the accumulator. In the mean time though, I'll continue looking for what could be causing this. I turned down my idle another tiny bit more today (like 100rpm) with no effect either.
