Aluminum 700R4 Pan?

Hey guys,

Just browsing for potential weight-reduction and performance parts for the car and found this:

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/GM-700...Pan,37371.html

It is pretty much a "standard depth" aluminum "finned" transmission pan.. The fins improve cooling, it looks cool with the aluminum finish, and isn't deeper than stock which means it won't scrape or worse. It comes with a new gasket, bolts, and drain plug as well, but I'm curious, does anyone know if this is lighter weight than the stock stamped steel transmission pan?

Thanks!

Re: Aluminum 700R4 Pan?

It may look cool, BUT....Stamped Stock steel pan will dent but not crack. With that being said a CAST aluminum pan will crack and not just dent. So if your present stock pan is showing scrape marks, I will let yuou draw your own conclusion. Good luck.

Good to know! As far as I know there are many other things that are lower, but what I really would like to know is if the aluminum pan is lighter?

I haven't tried to compare them, but a cast aluminum pan isn't likely to weigh less than a stamped steel one.

Re: Aluminum 700R4 Pan?

go to ebay. you can get that same pan for $45 shipped.

skip white also sells the pan for less then the link you posted.

and if you like you can get a chrome steel pan. for less then that.

I my self have that pan. finnish is Sweet. had mine cleared to hold the shine under the car..

keeping your tranny under 175 deg temp will make it last a life time.

with a good aftermarket cooler. it should never get over 150deg.
most are 6to7" tall 12" long and 1" wide (3/4 wide is also fine)
this would be the smallest i would use. used with push Ties to hold in place.
you can run from the top tranny line. in your Rad. to cooler. then back to top line.
fast and easy install time. this would do more to drop tranny temp..

Re: Aluminum 700R4 Pan?

Thanks for the info. I do have the BMR tranny cooler (the biggest one they sell) but I have no way of measuring tranny temps although I know that it is probably cooler than what it was before. I was going to put Royal Purple synthetic tranny fluid in the newly rebuilt tranny (about 2500 miles on it so far since 2009) since that also keeps fluid cooler and is better for the internals. The aluminum pan is the last thing for me to do to the 700R4 if it does keep it cooler by even 5 more degrees then it helps that extra bit.

I'll check it out on EBAY to see if I can get a better deal there.

Thanks guys!

Re: Aluminum 700R4 Pan?

Personally I would just run the stock steel pan. It is about the same weight, will dent not crack. Finned pans don't drop your temps a whole lot. The big tranny cooler probably cools your tranny more than it needs. I would switch over to Dexron 6 or amsoil atf. I have never thought the purple was worth the price.

Re: Aluminum 700R4 Pan?

I run a deep (extra fluid capacity) aluminum trans pan and have no real probs scraping or anything (lowered a bit also). It really doesnt hang lower than the oil pan or Xmember soo if you screw that up you'll have more to worry about than just that pan. I dont drive like a idiot much anymore tho.
Its a very good idea to have more fluid in your pan, esp if your spining some RPM (im 7,500-8k). Just like your engine oil pan.
The biggest cooler you can buy/fit is best.
The pan will help cooling very little but the aluminum pan supposedly can help to keep the case from flexing.

Just use a stock steel pan & if you want a drain plug, put it in the side of the pan on the back. The minimal temp drop you could get from an aluminum pan vs the cooler you already have is not worth the trouble that that pan could cause you.

I have that exact same pan, but I got it off of ebay years ago. I haven't installed it. It weighs more than the stamped steel one.

Re: Aluminum 700R4 Pan?

the trans cooler i run with lines adds almost 2 QTs of fluid. so myself i stick with the stock size pans. (have done the deep pans) I just run larger lines and bigger coolers now.trans stays way way cool. for a long life.

you Hit anything with your tranny pan.hard enof to crack it.. your taking out your oil pan first
and i would stop driving like the Dukes Of Hazzard! at that point!

but then i dont drive my Camaro on a dirt road. or even a wet street.
iv been driving for 40 years and never hit anything with my oil pans or tranny pans..ever!
even with my 4x4 truck iv had for 22 years...lol and its a Chevy! With a 700R4
with a stock pan..hell it's never been out of the truck..!
