Looking into having T5 speedo drive gears made

As most of you know the speedometer drive gear for T5's have been discontinued. The only source for them I know of is used transmissions in the bone yard, and they are keen on me tearing a trans apart to get the gear out of it. I use these gears in my T56 speedometer drive conversions.

I've contacted a few companies and they are willing to make them for me in small quantities. But thy won't be cheap. My cost will be right at $60 each with an up front investment of over $2000.

My question is, how many of you are in need of these gears? I'm going to have the 7 tooth made, 99% of us need the 7 tooth and not the 9 tooth.

I'd like to make a little on this, not looking to make a huge profit, was thinking of making about $10 each over my cost for my time and investment.

I welcome your thoughts.

Re: Looking into having T5 speedo drive gears made

does that mean I can send you eight new GM 7 tooth gears and you'll speedo-cable modify a couple T56 tailhousings?

Ever get anywhere with this? I've been making my own gears for the T5's and it is a big PITA

Re: Looking into having T5 speedo drive gears made

Any thoughts to having the driven gears made as well? Especially for the VSS equipped cars?

Re: Looking into having T5 speedo drive gears made

First, these same gears can be found in Chevy ( NOT B-O-P ) TH350s. Second, why use these at all? Much harder to get a precision calibration with so few teeth. Use the 15-19 tooth drive gears for 700R-4, then create a way to use the larger carriers for the 34-45 tooth driven gears. This gives much more options, and the parts are cheaper and easier to find.

Re: Looking into having T5 speedo drive gears made

Wrong. They are not the same gear, the ID of the TH350 gear is larger than the T5. I use the TH350 7 tooth and a T5 9 tooth to make my gears.

Edit: Also, using the 700r4 stuff would require machining a new tail housing...not in the least bit practical

The driven gears and the gear housing from TH350's will fit the T-10 and T-5, according to PATC:

Bull. Both the TH350 and the T5 use the exact same 27-spline slip-yoke for the front end of the driveshaft. Total interchange. If the T5 shaft gets bigger, then hone the gear out. Even so, stop using the obsolete no-calibration garbage.

Correct, the housing (or "bullet") will fit as will the with the small driven gear.

Yes, the output shafts are the same. You have it backwards though, the TH350 gear slides on a larger diameter part of the shaft. Larger than the T5 location as well, it WILL NOT fit the T5. 700r4 stuff will not work - period. I can show you exactly why if need be.

Having built three T5's and converted two to cable driven, I can assure you that parts are not compatible. Not trying to start a pissing match, but I did all the research needed for this.

These are the gears I make:

Ford, not GM. GM production has ceased years back, which is why threads like this have been around. Once again - I'm not trying to make people angry...the 7 tooth GM T5 gears are hard to come by
