banging noise from rear end?

Just swapped my 10 bolt rear out for another used 10 bolt a few weeks ago. All has been good so far,but tonight i noticed a light banging noise from the rear right wheel. Feels like i am going over the same bump in a road over and over again. It is like a clunk, clunk, clunk. Car even feels like it is going up and down too, like going over a small bump. Only noticed the car do this one other time and it was when the temp outside dropped below 32 degrees just like tonight! Inspected rear gears and changed fluid prior to installing it. What could this be? It prob wont do it again for a long time or until temp outside drops really low again. Rear is not posi either.

what if they are all tight? Could a broken shock do this? I will say that i have no emerg. brake cause when i bought the rear the brake cable was already cut off near the rear drum.

Re: banging noise from rear end?

Go for a spin and try varying (slower) speeds to see if the noise picks up/slows down based on how fast you're going.

Re: banging noise from rear end?

It's probably a wheel bearing or universal joint.

You can only hear it at idle speeds of 5-10 mph, goes away after you hit the gas.

I dont think its that. It made this noise from day1 even after i had the cover off and inspected the gears and changed the fluid.

I wonder if the 26 spline axles (v6 rear)i now have will hold up as well as my former 28 splines?

What do you mean by floor pan? You mean the hatch area where the top of the shock bolts up to?

Re: banging noise from rear end?

The top of the shock bolts to a stamped-out shape in the floor pan, right behind the rear seats. Very weak and prone to failure. Makes a weird noise when they punch out. Guess how I know....

Re: banging noise from rear end?

My '91 TA also makes a "clunking" noise from the rear that I have never been able to isolate. It does not seem to affect performance but it is annoying. Mine shows up at low speed (5-20 mph) when I am trying to maintain low speed like in a parking lot. I have often thought is was just the way the posi rear acted since it has done this since it was new. Suggestions?

Re: banging noise from rear end?

Check your rear drum brake components, my brake shoe stabilizer bar came off and was riding on the brake drum surface.

Did you add the posi fluid additive? When I swapped rear ends in my '91 RS, I had to add the additive because the former owner did add any.

Re: banging noise from rear end?

26-28 splines arn't the big problem, it's the weak diff and small gears.

its not posi,i just put in regular 80-90 gear oil in it. Funny thing is i just went outside to listen to it again and it doesnt seem like it can be heard when im in reverse.

Check the pinion nut to see if its tight. And make sure the pinion doesnt move in, out, up or down.. If its loose the head of the pinion head could be hitting the diff case.

I wonder why i cant hear it in reverse? and it only sounds like its coming from the right rear wheel too when going forwards?

Re: banging noise from rear end?

When you rotate the rear backwards the ring gear pushes the pinion away from the diff. When it rotates 4ward the pinion is pulling itself into the diff. (I think, or its the other way around, Im old and 4getfull)

Re: banging noise from rear end?

What did you have to do to fix?
If you're referring to the shock mount problem, I had a muffler shop weld some washers in there to take the place of the sheet metal that got broke out. Not a whole lot else you can do, if you've looked at it you know what I mean.

But it sounds like the OP's issue might be something else, if it's something to do with just rotating things, not going over bumps and such.
