Need help setting up 9 bolt gears..

This is the first ring and pinon I've done and running into a few problems. I have a few questions:

1) pinion bearing preload: Is the rotating torque measured with just the pinion in there or the pinion and the carrier? (I'm waiting on a new crush sleeve that thing got tight quick!)

2) There was a shim behind the pinion race and no shim behind the pinion bearing, is this right?

3) I checked my pattern (using honed out test bearings) and the pattern was good but I had NO backlash and was binding in spots, I'm hoping that will change when I check it again with the new bearings. I used the old carrier shims and pretty sure I did not mix them up, if I need more backlash I have to move it to the left correct? It was a pretty snug fit I left the old bearings on because they looked fine.. I have new ones though.

4) If I change the backlash then my pattern will be screwed up correct? And ill have to press the pinion bearing off to shim it possibly screwing up my new bearing?

Any answers, advice and tips are appreciated thanks.

1. Pinion only

2. Shim can go either place, functionally the same either way, put whatever shim you have wherever it fits

3. Yes. You want the carrier shims as thick as they can be (tight fit) as possible and still get the carrier in without tearing anything up.

4. No, changing the backlash does not require messing with the pinion. The pattern is a different matter; you might find that once you get the backlash right, the pattern is wrong, indicating that the pinion is too far in or too far out and therefore needs to be re-shimmed. No way to know until you get there. Better have a couple extra crush sleeves on hand just in case, they're cheeep anyway. Just another good reason for using a crush sleeve eliminator setup.

On #3, when you say "binding", do you mean rotational "binding" as in after you put it in, it binds when you turn it round? or do you mean its binding when you try and put the carrier in the housing?

#4,
You're dealing with two different planes of movment, vertical and horizontal. Changing one shouldn't have any effect on the other. Honestly, the shim is easier to get in behind the race. At least it was for me.

"waiting on a new crush sleeve"

haha been there... turn, nothing... turn nothing... turn, holy **** i cant spin it anymore...

Check out my thread, i did this a while back.

(be sure to check out post # 23, it has another thread i started that might be more specific to what you are trying to do)

Best of luck, i know i needed it LOL...

Re: Need help setting up 9 bolt gears..

Thanks guys, I swapped the shims and ended up with .004" backlash, so I subtracted .002" from the left side and added .002" to the right and put me at .006" backlash in spec so I called it good. Checked the pattern and it was good, went a little on the tight side with the crush sleeve but i think well be ok. Going back in tomorrow hopefully everything works out ok.

She's running great thanks for the help guys. Feels like I picked up a few horses! Nice and quiet, theres the smallest bit of whine when you let off the accelerator when your driving on the thruway but I can barely hear it. Posi seems to grab tighter too but im wondering if thats cos I didn't use the additive which I read you don't need with the cone style posi.

Good job. On the next one, you can hone your skills on the coast pattern.

The pattern was great, I think its cos we went 5"lbs over on the pinion torque, hopefully it loosens up.
