Mysterious Transmission fluid leak
Ok I am ripping my damn hair out over this one. I have a 1986 V6 automatic Firebird and the goddamn transmission is pissing fluid out of somewhere. Thought it was the pan gasket so I replaced it(The gasket was dried out and cracking). Thought that solved the problem but the F@#$%n leak is still there and I checked the cooler lines and they are dry, the front pump seal does not appear to be the culprit as its dry in the front area, the tailshaft seal is dry so I don't know WTF else to check. If it is the front pump seal, I'm junking the car as I'm not paying all that money to fix the damn transmission.(I dont have it anyway, I have 2 kids and a house to pay for) I could buy another car for that amount. I inherited this car from my late father but if its going to nickel and dime me like that, it's gone. I'll go back to running $500 pieces of crap. When it blows up, pull the plate off of it and buy another turd.

Re: Mysterious Transmission fluid leak
a possibly stupid question, but where is the fluid leaking from? If its leaking, it should be pretty clear where its coming from, or at least what end of the trans.
is it coming out of the inspection cover, running down the side, front back middle, ect?

Re: Mysterious Transmission fluid leak
It is all over the crossmember and blowing back towards the rear. It's hard to pinpoint where exactly. It's just coming out and leaving a decent sized puddle on the ground after I shut the car off.

Re: Mysterious Transmission fluid leak
I know you fixed the tranny seal, but if not done right, they can still leak. I know it is such a pain in the A**, to be dealing with constant car problems. Best thing to do with these cars is to always fix them right the first time. Not saying you didn't. Hey there is only a few places the tranny can leak.

Clean the **** out of it, take it down the street and back, crawl under it again and see where it's wet. One thing I ran into was the dipstick tube had cracked and it made a huge mess, just another thing to look for.

Re: Mysterious Transmission fluid leak
Your leak could be coming out of the rear of the driveshaft yoke. There is a seal (large o-ring) inside of the transmission that fits against the yoke to prevent the fluid from going by the splines and out of the weep hole at the end of the yoke. Otherwise wipe down the transmission completely, come back in a an hour and use a white paper towel and find the leak.
