Will this tranny work?
My 86 camaro needs a new tranny. Some of you may have read my many other threads about it. Well, I am finally coming down to a decision. I have found a 700r4 from an 86 cutlass. Will this fit in my car and what should I do? The owner works at NAPA and said I would have to change the tranny fluid and change two different seals on it because it has been sitting for a little while. He is a friend of mine and said he is confident in it that he would put it in his vehicle. He just heard I need one and said he would sell it to me. It has about 70k miles on it.

Re: Will this tranny work?
Only a 700r4 from 3rd gen will be direct bolt it
Why--- because torsion bar location and crossmember bolt up (different driveshaft lengths w/diff models
You can buy a relocation bracket for the torsion bar and modify the bolt holes or location of the x member though and it will work

If your matting a odd ball stick up, it may cost more for clutch parts.
but you can bolt up anything if you got the need.
Also note around 70,000 miles is the point of no return for a 700R4, if the fluid has never been changed up to that point, a whole bunch of new fluid is bound to losen gunk and cause a problem.
Those are picky trannys, they work or don't.
Id have no problem grabbing any random unknown history Th350 or Th400 form a junk yard and bet on it before a used 700

Re: Will this tranny work?
you can take your tailshaft housing off and put it on any other 700r4. that solves the torque arm problem. like said above id check the pan and make sure its not a 200r4. both are 4spds but length is different. first thing before buying it is too check the fluid. pull the dipstick and put a few drops onto a clean piece of white paper. if its not clean and reddish/pink then don't bother because 700r4s are very finicky if not taken care of. either way id change input/ output shaft seals, dipstick grommet, and tv cable o ring. mise well do it right the first time.
