Rear End Maintenance Help Please

I just got a 98-02 rear off a camaro SS with 3.42gears and about 60k miles. I am putting on C6 brakes and rotors once I receive my backing plates from EB. I know I have to pull the axels out and have read in places about replacing seals ect… I wanted to know what seals along with anything else that I should replace/do to it while I have it off the car. Looking for parts needed and part numbers. Also what is the preferred rear end diff fluid or does it matter.
Thanks, Sean

Personally, if its not leaking from anywhere I wouldnt worry about it. I know for the 10 bolts they sell a cover gasket, but I dont use them. I just use gray silicone. For fluid, I use 75W-140 synthetic. I'm not sure if the posi unit in there needs an addidive or not. I dont think it does.

Re: Rear End Maintenance Help Please

If your pulling axles out you should always change the axle seals especially if the rearend is the camaro. I would rather spend the $6.50 for the seals now then have to go back in later!

wheel seal - 2 ea
Oreilly's Part # : 8660S

Also, if it's a posi, use the additive. And don't use synthetic gear lube with a posi. I would replace the axle seals, they're super cheap.

Depends on what posi it is. There is a posi unit that uses no clutches, therefore you need no special additive.

And whats wrong with synthetic lube with a posi unit? I do all the time at work on every axle I rebuild. In the 4.5 years I've been a driveline tech, I've never had one come back.

Apparently, Auburn and Eaton don't recommend synthetics for usage with their limited slips. That said, I've used Mobil 1 with GM's additive in my Auburn for a number of years without issue.

I was thinking of the Auburn cone type. Sorry for assuming. The Torsen or Detroit locker type should benefit from the synthetics. I had an Auburn that chattered with synthetic, went to conventional type lube and it shut up.

No biggie. I didnt know that some of them chattered with synthetic, so I assumed also I work at Ford and we use synthetic in everything here with no problems. I just assumed that the GM units would be no different.

Re: Rear End Maintenance Help Please

I also use synth in EVERYTHING, including Eaton and Dana units. Haven't run an Auburn for YEARS, since the last time I had one and it wore out and I called em up to get replacement parts and they told me they don't offer em for units more than 2 years old except by accident (i.e. in case new parts happen to fit old units, which apparently they go to some trouble to make sure doesn't readily happen). That's the last Auburn I have ever, or EVER WILL, run. That company can go take a flying leap as far as I'm concerned, if they refuse to support their product for even as short a time as an OEM vehicle warranty.

Many DO tend to chatter more with that than with dinosaur juice. Not sure why, I'd like to find out someday.

I just put an extra ˝ bottle or so of additive in when I chang eto synth. Seems to take care of it.
