Rear End Question

Hello all,
I was under my car yesterday and noticed a considerable amount of "thickened oil" across the floor pan where the drive shaft meets the read end. Its hard but is gooey (haha im sorry im just trying to be descriptive) It seems like there is a leak, and while the car drives it spits the oil across the floorpan. Could this be all the rear end oil? If so what gaskets could have went?

I don't know much about rear ends so if all that sounded out of whack I apologize in advance.

thanks for any feedback.

Re: Rear End Question

Sounds like the front seal (pinion seal) on the rear end. Its only like a 7 dollar part but you have to take alot apart to fix. Might be able to drop driveshaft, remove pinion nut and the rear yoke only but I'm not positive on that. If that won't work the whole rear end has to come apart.

Re: Rear End Question

Most of the time something that thick is coming from the U joint. Be sure that the oil is coming from the rear end and not the u joint before you start taking things apart.

Re: Rear End Question

wow thanks for the replies guys.

I will jack it up on monday and take a better look around. I am hoping now that it is the u joint, would be an easier fix eh?

Re: Rear End Question

If it's the u joint then there is probably nothing to fix. They tend to sling the excess grease out of them.

Re: Rear End Question

there is a considerable amount though. Today driving to work, around 75 mph the car has a small shake to it that feels like its coming from the drivetrain from the end of the trans back. I am no mechanic but that's what it seemed like.

It's sounds like a u joint. Much easier and cheaper to replace if you have a vice big enough or press.

Yep, sounds like a good old u-joint. The u-joint seals have hardened and allowed the grease to sling out. Noe the needle bearings are going. Cheap and easy fix though!!!
