700r4 rebuild

My son and I are rebuilding the 700r4 for his 86 z. What I would like to know is what is the best rebuild kit to use? Any advice on specific parts I should use? Basically what parts do I need ?

Looks like good stuff. Though, I wasn't looking to spend quite that much if possible.

how much are you comfortable spending? Once known, then options can be offered?

Re: 700r4 rebuild

I'm looking to spend around $300. I've already dissassembled it. Whoever rebuilt it before didn't have any springs for the accumulator, they just had some nuts in there for spacers and the seperator plate was bent from that. So I also need the accumulator springs and seperator plate and the spring for the servos was missing as well. and I bent the retaining ring for the 1st/rev apply piston. additionally I would like to put a shift kit in it.

then get a basic rebuild kit from the local parts store or Summit. They cost under $200

something like this but you need to check the correct application

Re: 700r4 rebuild

If you need all those additional parts check out WITTRANS.com You can about have a transmission shipped to your door as individual parts. I just did a transmission for a guy and needed to buy that same spring (~$7 I think). They also offer all the accumulator springs, be ready to do your homework because there are a few to choose from. However if you buy a shift-kit it may come with the ones you need so look at that as well.

Re: 700r4 rebuild

If that site wasn't so confusing I'd probably go back to it.

Re: 700r4 rebuild

If you are going to put any power in front of the trans I would look into upgrading the core you are starting with. I believe the '86 version doesn't have the aux. valve body that was added in '87 or '88 and was a major upgrade for these trannys.
