Re: 5 speed manual trans in 87 gta
I have recently contemplated this in my 87 IROCZ. The conclusion from hours of internet and discussion with a buddy that races Fcars in A-sedan racing....use the New world T5 (not the orig T5)...these trans are in cars after 89. You'll need to trim the tunnel, but all else works. Need to watch the trans mount...may need to invert the bushing. Expect to pay around $500 plus a new pressure plate & disc. Will also need to update cal.

The following link/pictorial should provide some valuable info about install:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...y-t5-swap.html
The so-called WC was produced from 1988 to 1992. Since the OE single-piece cross member is the same for manual and auto trans and since it's positioned in the same place, I'd see no reason for manipulating the mount.
Abuse (sticky tires, power shifting, dumping the clutch, etc.) will make a quick end to either version of the T-5. Consider an after market version if any of the above will be a major part of the fashion in which you drive the car.
