700R4 Front pump seal (I've searched)
So my front pump seal, that goes around the shaft, will leak a pretty good bit if sat for about 2 days or so. If I drive it everyday then it's alright, also it my tranny would slip sometimes in first and sometimes in third when I step on it. I never did put the correct amount of fluid in when I had my engine rebuilt and what not, but haven't driven it but up the street. And fluid is definitely getting to where it needs to go. My question is, why is it that if the front seal is to be replaced, that deems the pump is bad? I don't get it. Why not just replace the front seal and carry on?

If you have slip in the trans, I'd stop driving it anywhere...put it on a level surface & top it off. If you still have slip, you likely have some burnt steel and fiber plates and will need to pull the forward clutch....not so easy to do. If it does not slip, I would replace the front seal. be sure to check the shaft for a bur also.

Sometimes if the torque converter is installed "roughly", you can develop a bur or nick on the shaft...which depending on where it is can cut the seal. this is especially true if the converter had a nick on it. Check both surfaces that run on the seal. Also, when reinstalling the converter, put some light grease on the mating surfaces

Just take your time. Start when you have all kinds of time...work your way around the seal with a lightweight hammer. Its got a nice flange...but you just need to be patient. Don't let the start of the seal frustrate you...you'll bend/kink it & then you'll need another.

If the bushing in the pump (behind the front seal) is worn, a new seal won't last long. Be sure to inspect it carefully while the seal is out.

Front seals do not leak from sitting. They are a pressure type of seal and will leak when running, and stop leaking when the motor is turned off. I have never seen a front seal leak when sitting in 33+ years of doing this, and I have talked to other builders about this with the same results. Top hat seals at the TV cable or dipstick tube are the most common leaks when sitting. Front pump bolt seals rarely leak.
