91 z28. Stock. 700R4. When you floor it, it will go to the redline and just hang there for about a second then it shifts. At all other driving conditions it shifts and runs perfectly normal. Anything less than full throttle and it shifts ok. This is killing me (Ran a 16.12 at the dragstrip; should have been a 15.12). Took it to a trans shop; he adjusted the TV cable; no change at all. Any thoughts?

Seems like about any older GM auto we've had does that, winds way past the power curve before shifting. Always wondered if there was a fix for that too.

I would keep adjusting the cable until it shifts the way you want it. That is really annoying, my old RS did that, it would wind up to 5,500rpm on WOT and would not pull at all for 2-3 seconds! Mine also had a distributor problem.

Is this in every gear shift or just 2-3? If it's every shift, its possible a previous owner changed the governor springs to make it shift later. If it's just the 2-3 shift its called shift flare. A Vette servo will help this out.

I changed the governor springs out to help the 2-3 shift. Through trial an error, I got the 1-2 shift to be at 53-5400 and the 2-3 (when it happened, it's having shift flare bad) to happen at 5000. I got so sick of the shifts feeling so late, I went back to the stock governor springs, and 5000 1-2 and 4300 2-3 feels much better and is faster.

So without knowing if it's every gear shift or just a 2-3, its hard to pinpoint.

Adjusting the tv cable could solve this. I still have the same problem with my 86 IROC. It will touch redline before shifting into second. If I give it anymore slack, it will not shift into 1st form 2nd when I kick it down. If it doesn't shift from 2 into 1 when you kick it to the floor, there is not enough line pressure. I would like mine to shift when I want it to, not when the tranny does. I don't like to redline it either.

When you speak of a shift flare, Do you mean it doesn't shift when manually shifted, or does it rev as if were disengaged?

I would just let up on the throttle for a split second and then dump it. If your rpms are high enough, when you kick down the throttle it wont upshift back into 1st gear

It happens 50-80% of the time. It doesn't matter if it's in D or if I do it manually. It doesn't rev up like its in neutral, it just doesn't shift. I've had to to over 6k at WOT and it still wouldn't shift. I'd let off the gas and then it would shift after a couple seconds. I even let off the gas one time waiting for the shift and I floored it too soon and it's still revving.

I get the same issue with my IROC. I go above 5000 rpm before it shifts also, even if I manually shift it. I don't wanna blow the motor, or cause wear and tear from red lining. I don't think this is "flare" though.

Mine only does it on the 1-2 shift. Doesnt matter if I shift it manually. It'll go to the redline, sit there at the redline for about a second, then, finally...it shifts. We have adjusted the TV cable; made no difference. Everything else works fine.
