If you do this then be sure to get the correct gears for your differential. You will need the special thick gear for your 2 series differential. You also need to get a good installation kit.

Gears determine the relationship between engine RPM and wheel RPM. Wheel RPM is determined by ground speed.

Whatever gears your car has, forces your engine to run in a particular RPM range, at any given road speed.

If your engine has lots of power in the new range (after you change gears), then it's better.

If your engine has less power in its new RPM range, then, not so good.

Ever been in one of those cars that will just SMOKE the tires mercilessly at a stop light, but if you try to pass somebody on the highway, take about 5 minutes to pull out and get by and move back in?

Ever drive a tractor that will pop wheelies when you are sitting still, but will only go 4 mph with the throttle wide open?

That's about the perfect description of a stock TBI 305 or a LG4 with 3.73 gears. Yeah, it'll take off like a rocket from a stop light; but after about the first 100 or so', past 35 mph or thereabouts, net-net it's a negative. The engine winds up to a RPM where it produces absolutely no power whatsoever. You get that initial push-off quick, then you can't shift up fast enough to keep the car actually accelerating. You're left sitting there with your car going WAAAAAAHHHHHHH as hard as it can while the one in the other lane's tail lights keep getting smaller and smaller.

As an example, one of my little brothers bought a new 84 Z28 LG4, and he wanted to race it against my L69 5-speed. I drilled him. Tore him a new one. Left him sitting at the light wondering where I went. So a year or 2 later he went to the buzzard and got a 3.73 rear out of a wrecked L69 car. After that, we lined up with him in front, and took off from a traffic light. He jumped out pretty good there at the start, got a coupla extra car lengths right at the start. Then my car got on his bumper right after shifting to 2nd, went around him through 2nd, shifted by his door into 3rd, and was in front of him halfway through 3rd. By 4th I was multiple car lengths in front of him. By the time I was all the way through 4th, he was at least 1000' behind me; and that was only about 20 seconds or so after the light turned green.

A TBI car is even worse about that than a LG4 car.

Re: any suggestions installing new 3.73's in 3.08 spot

It just depends on what your running now for a ring and pinion as to what improvement you will feel installing a new gear.(one right for you). I was running a 2.73 and did some research and came out with a 3.42 with a Eaton Posi. being the best option for my particular needs. My car pulls better now off the line, from a roll, and passing on the freeway. You name it. Feels 100 times better. My car is a 305 daily driver and its never going to be "Greased Lighting" but finding the right gear has really helped. As I said, 305,TBI,700R4 = 3.42 for me.Throwing on a "LPW Ultimate Support Cover" did not hurt it either.
Here's a link to the work I had done if your interested = https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...de-photos.html

so 3.42's or 3.73's i plan to make the car a beast... but do not know how long that will take(round300rwhp)
what would i have to change to make the 3.73's correspond with the rest of my rear end
(ring and pinion) or anything else
