9 bolt bw upgrade
Ive got 2.77 gears in my 89 iroc and i'm going to upgrade. will i be happy with 3.27 or should i go 3.7? Then do i rebuild tranny (700r4) and add shift kit, everything else is tight on the car as far as im concearned so this is where im putting my money. L98 J65 GH3 G80 just a few codes for an idea of what im working with - still waiting on a call from 9bolt.com im about to just order the 3 series carrier and gears but i really want some info. thanx in advance

Re: 9 bolt bw upgrade
You will LOVE a 3.70 and an A4 under your car. The feel of the pull is night and day. Only draw back is the MPG, but if you're not too worried about it, then you would do best by going higher than 3.27. I got 17-19 on the HWY with my 700R4 and Richmond 3.73's. I had a 10 bolt, of course; same difference.

Re: 9 bolt bw upgrade
As you will find out by reading up on both the 10 bolt and 9 bolt, they aren't the strongest things out there. They will break under tons of torque and power. If you're planning on really upgrading your engine and you end up putting down a few hundred ponies, then your rear will be the first to go. If I were you, I wouldn't bother spending more that the cost of gears and perhaps a girdle. Yes, the 9 bolt is a 1/4 of an inch bigger, but still. Also, make sure your gears are setup right as that is detrimental to your rear lasting.

Re: 9 bolt bw upgrade
Also Like to mention that there is an article floating around here about how much stronger the 9 bolt is compared to the 10 bolt, The 9 bolt is listed as being able to handle around 500hp and is stronger than the dana 44.
Also with the 9 bolt, the bearing are pressed onto the axles and are bolted to the housig, wheras the 10 bolt axles are held in place by a clip.I had my axles out before and can't remember the spline count on axles for the 9 bolt, but if I remember correctly, the spline count is less than the spline count on the 10 bolt axles. .
Just wanted to though by thoughts in here.

I have the BW 9 bolt. Pyle Brothers here in my town can't get parts for them or work on them. I have talked with 9bolt.com but they are in Australia? Pyle Brothers told me that no one in the Houston area can get parts for them. Mine is still fine but that raised a few questions for me.

www.9bolt.com is the only place I know of that might carry them. Post what you find! It's been awhile since I talked to them.

Re: 9 bolt bw upgrade
With regard to the gear choice, my opinion is that the 3.70/3.73 is a little deep for a TPI/L98 and a 4 speed auto. That first gear is so deep on that trans to begin with, and then you have the short power band with low end torque, plus ONLY 4 gear. I switched from the 2.77 to a 3.27 and when I had the 700r4 I could still easily fry the tires. I've since swapped in a T5 with really tall .068 overdrive, and I still wouldn't want the 3.70/3.73 gear. If the TPI rev'd up another 7 or 800 RPM's it'd be different, but it just quits too early. You need all the time under the curve you can get. You know what they say about opinions though!!!

a custom built torque converter will complement your upgrades and will make a bigger improvement than the gears.
adding the 3.42s to my crate engine was cool, but the custom 3200 stall was the WOW factor...
