t56 teardown/inspection underway
I just got a t56 for next to nothing, main reason being there was no history/info on it. All I know for sure is that it's from a 4th gen camaro.
Anyway... I pulled the tail along with reverse and the counter shaft extension to have a look and see what kind of shape everything was in. I should have the 5/6 driven gear and case off tomorrow once I finish up the puller I'm making for it.
Here is what I've found so far
Decent amount of wear on 6th gear engagement teeth
Up close 6th gear engagement teeth
5/6 synchro wear (disassembled)
The opposite side looks new
Good bit of rotational play as well
Keys appear to be O.K.
Ring has a bit of wear, but not terrible
5th gear engagement teeth look pretty bad
Reverse engagement teeth
Rev. synchro has a lot of rotational play
Also, I noticed the magnets were missing(hmm), so someone has definitely been inside the trans before.
I was hoping I might be able to reshape the engagement teeth on the gears, but I'm worried they might not have enough material left on them to function properly. It's looking like the synchros are in rough shape as well. I've rebuilt a few automatics before, but this is my first time getting into a 6 speed, so I'm just taking my time and going by what the book says.
I'm also planning on picking up a press (20 ton) from harbor freight sometime this week. I figure for the price, It's definitely worth it, and a lot more efficient than hammers/pipes.
Anyone with some experience inside of t56's care to chime in?

Not sure what book you have, but if you don't already have it, this may come in handy for you.

That doesn't look as bad as you think, if you compared them to a new one there is not much meat missing.
The 5th gear one I would need more pic's of to tell.
Guess it all depends what your after, If you want that perfict shift then replace them but can get kind of expensive. Plus your not going to be speed shifting 5-6 anyways.

Your picture of the rev syncho is the backside, which isn't used (and means someone flipped the synchro already) The synchro sliders are designed to take the abuse and your 5-6 synchro will need to be replaced. (You can still use it as a Rev slider)
Finally you can't judge the condition of the blocker rings by their teeth. Most of their work is done by the friction material on the ID. Typically you won't reuse them anyway, unless you know they're new/good and you can use machinist dye to verify they still maintain a good pattern on the gear cone.

I hope those teeth aren't completely shot. The teeth on my 1st and 2nd look worse than that.

Re: t56 teardown/inspection underway
That's the same manual I'm currently using(the pdf from ttcautomotive).
Thanks for the replys guys. I planned on replacing the blocker rings with a carbon/kevlar set, so I didn't really check them out too in depth. I thought the rev. Synchro might have been flipped, but the other side of it doesn't show any signs of wear.
Should I try to clean up the engagement teeth on the gears and see how they engage with the new synchro or just leave them as is(the engagement teeth)?
