700r4 install questions
I just put in a 700r4 in the place of my T5. With that I had no A/T provisions on the car (i.e. tranny cooler, flexplate, lockup, ect.)
So with the new cooler hooked up, new lines, TV cable adjusted (I think) the car acts like it wants to move when revved up to approximately 3k but just sits there after rocking slightly. I also ended up adding about 1 gallon of tranny fluid (the tranny has the deep pan from TCI.) and 1 quart to the torque converter before I put it in.
My roommate said something about needing to bleed the lines on his th-350 when he had his 350 S10. I'm guessing i need to do the same...how exactly would i do this and is this the only thing i need to do?
Sorry for any ignorance I just have no idea about automatic transmissions.
Thanks, Chas

Re: 700r4 install questions
NOT that I know what I'm doing, but ...
Might need more fluid - I seem to remember adding more than 5 quarts when I installed mine dry, and I have the stock pan. When I did mine, I got car started, slowly ran the shifter though each position, then back to park - did this twice, then checked fluid - added more, then again, and again, until I could feel the car start to move in gear - then with foot on brake, applied a touch of gas in each gear, then back to park, and checked added fluid again. Went though this for about 30 minutes or so, until I got fluid worked though tranny enough to get car moving, then a drive through the parking lot (a 100 yard circle), and back to checking/adding again, then a 1 block drive then checked/added again, and just kept it up until I had full fluid every time I checked.
Don't know if that's the 'right' way to do it, but babying mine along like that did the trick for me - I can't remember how much fluid I ended up buying, but I remember it being alot more than I expected.

Re: 700r4 install questions
Chas, when they installed the 700R4 in my buggy, they told me it took over 13 Litres of ATF
I have a B & M Deep Pan like you
Think about this..
2 Pints per Quart, 4 Quarts per Gallon
1 Litre is basically a Quart
So you might need 13 Quarts to fill your system

Sorry, I see by your thread you filled the Converter DUH
You don't need to bleed any lines, the pump is high enough PSI to push out any air

Re: 700r4 install questions
Have you hooked up a line pressure gauge to the port on the side of the trans?
Without line pressure, you will kill the tranny

Re: 700r4 install questions
700R4s are tricky
They will run with some line pressure and feed clutches and servos/accumulator valves but still burn themselves out Fast

Re: 700r4 install questions
I have been nervous and have tried to keep the amount of running time to a minimum until i know its working properly.
I followed all of the directions that were included in the B&M pamphlet for adjusting linkage.
Do i have to pull the tranny pan to adjust the TV cable? I did the push the button WOT then return to normal then WOT again to make sure its adjust i also pull the cable off the throttle bracket to make sure it was going back in all the way. (this was all done with the car off by the way)

Re: 700r4 install questions
I have the 700 in my 86 but I want to put in a 400, will this bolt right in or will I need a different bell.
Also what are some good donor cars for the 400?

Re: 700r4 install questions
The bellhousing has the same bolt pattern and the 700r4 doesn't have removal bellhousing, try posting in the engine section for the engine donors.

Re: 700r4 install questions
the 700r4 I believe uses 11.5 quarts of fluid... have you tried manually shifting the transmission at the transmission.?

Re: 700r4 install questions
no i haven't but i installed the shifter so the little pivot pin can easily pop out and into the bracket. I dont think it is the shifter, I am also able to see the bracket move thru the hole in my floor.

Re: 700r4 install questions
I have tried shifting through all the gears but I pulled the upper tranny line while the car was running and no fluid came out at all not even a drop. I figured some would come out if i pulled it off completely. So does this sound like the oil pump?
