2 or 3 series differential question
Bought this new from someone who had it in their garage for years and forgot about it.
Does this carrier appear to be a 3 series?
and these gears are also 3 series i believe ( i bought them from ebay clamining theyre 3 series)
appear all to be 3 series to me, anyone have disagreements?

You should have posted this in the differential forum, you'd probably get a better answer........any ways, what's the gear ratio? Rule of thumb, for 7.5 GM/Chevy is if the gear ratio is "higher numerically" than 3.08 it will be a 3 series, if it's lower numerically than 3.23 it will be a 2 series!!! This helps if the carrier has the original ring gear installed!!
There are thick gear sets for use on 2 series carriers, that will give you 3 series ratios!!
I know someone will chime in, and confirm this for you, you could try and visit the web site of the manufacturer of your carrier, and see if they give you some specs, like the measurements that you are showing, that will either confirm it for you, or not!!

Re: 2 or 3 series differential question
im aware of everything you just said, besides the diff forum , the reason i asked, because as stated, this is a brand new carrier, came with no gears, original owner wasnt sure if it was a 2 or 3 series.
Could you move this over to the correct forum for me?

Re: 2 or 3 series differential question
Are there any part numbers on the carrier? That would be a good find, then we can "web search" them, and figure it out for you!!
I can't move this to the correct forum, as I haven't figured how to do that yet, but I'm sure the mods could!!
How about it mods? Can you move this to the proper forum, like Transmissions and Drivetrain???
Hello Superjustin13!!
I did a little searching, and I came up with this, your pictured carrier is a Torsen T-2 diff, used in Camaro's in 1999-2002!! I hope that you got all the "little" parts for that carrier!!
Check for yourself at www.torsen.com
I still can't tell you 100%, whether it's a 2 or 3 series, but I'd put money on it being a 3 series!!!

Re: 2 or 3 series differential question
Hello Superjustin13!!
Like I said, you should check out the torsen web site!!
This is what I found, 2 series part number is 9030, 9031, or 9032, came in ratios of 2.73, 2.93, or 3.08
3 series part number is 9020, 9021, or 9022, came in ratios of 3.23, 3.42, 3.73, or 4.11
Part number example is 9022 05 100001 being 9022 is the part number, 05 year of manufacture, 1 month of manufacture, 00001 serial number.
Strange, but you would figure that part 9030, 9031, 9032 would be a 3 series, and that part 9020, 9021, and 9022 would be 2 series carriers, due to the numbering!! Strange to number them backwards like that, but this info came from their own web site!!
Measured from end of carrier to ring gear flange (left end to ring gear flange) 2 series measures 1.659 inches, and the 3 series measures 1.959 inches. Based on your second picture, it appears that you have a 3 series carrier!! Now you have to figure out if the gears go with that Torsen carrier!! Should be a set of GM 7.5/7.6 compatable ring and pinion set, ten bolts to hold the ring gear in place??? What's the ratio of the gear set????
